Jersey Central Power & Light Company (JCP&L) will use helicopter patrols to conduct inspections of transmission lines across its service territory beginning May 4 as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance service reliability.

Residents may see a small helicopter flying at low altitude or hovering over transmission lines and towers while workers examine power line connections and other equipment. Local law enforcement agencies will be notified before inspections take place.

The helicopter patrols provide on-board observers with a clear view of overhead equipment far more quickly than workers on the ground and typically require about two weeks for completion depending on weather conditions and scheduling needs.

“Helicopter inspections provide a safe, timely and cost-effective way to patrol transmission circuits in their entirety,” said Tony Hurley, JCP&L vice president of Operations. “The inspections provide valuable information and help us take proactive steps to improve service reliability.”

The inspections are part of JCP&L’s plan to spend approximately $267 million in 2015 on projects to enhance and maintain a strong electrical system and help meet future load growth in its 13-county service area.
