A Frum Lakewood woman could have easily pocketed a bundle of cash without anyone noticing or knowing, but instead chose to give the owner a chance at getting it back.
The woman was shopping at the Old Navy store in the Freehold Mall last week when she found a bundle of cash – over $1,000* – on the floor of one of the aisles.
But instead of sticking it into her purse, the young Lakewood woman went up to the cashier and notified her of the find, handing her the money. She then requested that the cashier hang up a note on the door in case the owner came back searching for the money, and left the store.

What a beautiful person she must be. I certainly hope the money gets reunited with the person who lost it, and I hope that person realizes how lucky they are. I also hope that person is a lot more careful in the future. I couldn’t afford to lose $20, let alone over $1000.
About six years ago my wallet fell out of my pocket on to the seat of a bus as I was getting up to disembark. This happened on route 70 in Brick, near the Shoprite/Kohl’s plaza. I realized my loss just as the bus was pulling away, heading towards Lakewood bus terminal. There was only one other passenger on the bus, and as I got up he quickly moved in to my seat. I thought it odd at the time, as there were 50 other seats empty. I put two and two together after the fact, that he had spotted my wallet and wanted to sit on it to hide it. Lucky for me there was only $27 in it, with all my ID’s and a debit card. I called the bus company right away with my cell phone to ask the dispatcher to radio Charlie (the driver) and tell him what happened. I also called my bank to report my card lost. Well, I saw that passenger again the next day on the bus wearing a new pair of sneakers. I couldn’t accuse him because I had no proof. My wallet appeared in my mailbox six months later, minus the $27. I just thank G-d that there hadn’t been more cash in my wallet that particular day.
Would it be assur or is the person patur from any hashavas aveidah obligation?
I think she did a very Nobel deed. But I’d like to hear a happy ending. If it’s cash there is no way to trace it and what’s to stop any of the staff from pocketing it. And now that it’s publicized how does a person prove its theirs? I personally would’ve posted that I found x amount of cash if someone is missing they could come forward and say how much and what bills…..
It is a kiddush hashem.. I while back I found a purse in shoprite parking lot. A person’s whole life was in it. I gave it to the police station and the person sent me flowers in appreciation of returning her precious purse.. only in lakewood do u have these occurrences..
I once left a nice watch on a table in a very busy shul for several days. When I remembered where I left it I went back to get it. My only thought when entering the shul was whether to first check the bulletin board or the table where I left it. It was exactly where I left it.
I only realized days later that the possibility never even crossed my mind that someone would have taken it! MI K’amcha Yisroel!!
Gave it to the cashier? Manager would be more like it.

It is not a matter of trust, it is a matter of responsibility. The manager and cahier have 2 separate responsibilities, this is the Managers.
