NJSP Responds to Critics of their New Ghost Car

ghost carThe following is a statement from the NJSP regarding their new Ghost Car which has been causing a stir online.

“People are really talking these “ghost cars” we showed at our 101 Days of Summer Press Conference yesterday. Some people think we are wrong for using unmarked cars because it’s tantamount to entrapment. I don’t agree with this logic. In no way do unmarked cars prompt people to drive worse; they only allow our troopers to observe them driving dangerously when they believe law enforcement is not there. We are looking for the most dangerous drivers and want to change their behaviors, or see them off the roads.

Others are writing about the deterrent factor of having marked cars on the highways. Please know that the overwhelming majority of our patrol cars are white with full markings, but there is also an effective deterrent factor to promoting the use of unmarked cars. Drivers prone to radical driving behaviors may curb those tendencies when they hear of a greater possibility of being seen by troopers in unmarked cars.

Our greatest hope is not for more tickets, but for greater safety on our highways, fewer crashes and fewer deaths. If the discussion about “ghost cars” leads to less aggressive driving, then we all may have a safer summer driving season.
Captain Stephen Jones, NJSP.”

  1. Actually I think most of the complaints were that the NJSP has dark tint on the front windows which is illegal in NJ. Why should they get to break the law but then pull so many NJ residents over if they have front window tint? That law should be repealed, the claim of officer safety is not strong enough to prohibit front window tint in my opinion.

  2. To scoopreader. What a dumb comment. Why are they allowed to carry fully loaded guns while we cant? Why can they pull over cars and we cant?

  3. Let us all be honest with ourselves. The only thing bothering us about unmarked cars is our inability to hide some bad driving habits we have become accustomed to. When we see a marked car we automatically behave better. In truth, our driving should be responsible whether we are being tracked by the police or not. We owe it to ourselves and to all others on the road. Safety should be are only agenda, not being fearful of getting caught and paying the price.

  4. Haven’t there been unmarked cars on the highways for years??? I don’t understand why this has suddenly become a topic of conversation.

  5. To nice. That’s even dumber. First of all if you get a license you can also carry a fully loaded gun. Second of all, the reason tint is illegal is due to the (misguided) belief that it blocks your vision while driving. I would think this should affect police too, no?

  6. To JOAT: trying to get a permit for concealed carry is more difficult in NJ than a permit to purchase, 2 totally different things. It’s not as easy as just “getting a license”. And the reason tint is illegal in NJ as of 2003 is that it can obstruct the view of police…say if there is a gun on the seat, a knife, an open container of alcohol, etc. It’s about officer safety, not for the operator of the vehicle.

  7. To LKWD according to the law as quoted in N.J.A.C. section 13:20-33.7 states to quote “…shall not be certified which has tinted spray
or plastic material added to previously approved glazing in the front windshield or windows, vents, wings, deflectors, or
side shields to the immediate right or left of the driver, because such condition changes the vision and light transmission
properties of the glazing in areas where driver visibility shall not be obscured or obstructed”. You can see it at http://www.epa.gov/region2/air/sip/13_20-Sub33.pdf in sub section 7. Clearly because of driver.
