Conrail, responsible for the train tracks that run through Lakewood, is nearing the completion of the installation of its first railroad crossing gates at their tracks.
The gates were recently installed at the County Line Road crossing, and are expected to be installed at the other crossing in the near future.

Hmmm…. mixed feelings. I think out of 10 times I get there and the lights are blinking and the bells are clanging… probably 7 of them there is no train in sight. It runs for ages until eventually folks give a good hard look I both directions and cross. It is clear it is broken or mis-triggered often, only now traffic will be stuck waiting for a repair for potentially hours each time it happens. It is definitely safer… especially when you have the boy who cried wolf since it operates so often without a train…. but this could be disastrous for traffic if it indeed comes down often without a train.
why?
Weren’t they there years ago like in the 70’S OR 80’S AND WE’RE TAKEN DOWN I remember rt 9 having them as well
I agree with number 1. Potential for disaster & the gain is minimal. The train goes very slow anyway so no real danger exists.
I cross those tracks at least 6 times a day & have had the same experience as #1, but the crews have been working on this for quite a while, so I am hoping they upgraded the system to prevent false alarms
Kids in this town are always pulling up the lever on the tracks that indicates a coming train causing the lights to go on forever. I’ve called the cops in the past to no avail. I tell you, if this happens with the bars down I’m running straight through them. Traffic is bad enough as is, where are our elected officials?????
Route 9 and 7th Street had gates back many years ago
