PHOTO: Maryland Resident Airlifted to Hospital after Being Run Over by NJ Transit Bus in Lakewood

A pedestrian was seriously injured after being run over by a NJ Transit bus in Lakewood today, officials confirm to TLS.

Debra Cohn-Dobkin, 68, visiting from Maryland, was walking in the area of Route 9 and 6th Street around 3:01 PM on Saturday afternoon when she was struck by the bus turning East onto 6th Street, Traffic Safety Officer David Silberstein tells TLS.

Upon arrival, police determined that the bus had run over the victim’s legs, severely crushing them, Silberstein says.

EMS treated the patient on scene and then transported the patient to the Lakewood High School, from where she was airlifted to Jersey Shore University Medical Center.

Lakewood’s Traffic Safety division is investigating the incident.

“We’re trying to figure out where she was walking,” Silberstein says. “There were a lot of people walking in the area, so hopefully someone saw something,” says Silberstein.

  1. Oh gosh!! This is sooo sad! But sadly to say that it was bound to happen! Anyone turning from route 9 on to 6th street can not see if pedestrians are there n since it a highway the vehicle turning into the block can not stop once it turned, even if it sees a pedestrian because there are speeding cars right behind him anxious to drive on!! There needs to be some better safety alternative there. A traffic light is not good enough . Maybe a 4 way stop sighn!

  2. I can think of no reason to fly. They would have been at JSUMC in 20 minutes by ground, at least 10 minutes quicker than it probably took to transport to LZ, flight medics coming on board to get report, transferring to helicopter, taking off, flying to JS, landing, going down elevator to trauma room. Someone involved please comment if I am wrong. I’ll admit I do not know all the circumstances but I can’t figure it out. In fact, there is almost NEVER any reason to fly to JS trauma from almost anywhere in Lakewood.

  3. @ #3 Anonymous –

We don’t know what happened – perhaps she trapped under the bus and required extrication – if so by the time they extricated her perhaps helicopter could have landed at the high school, thus cutting down on transport time. I don’t know if this happened but don’t assume unless you know more details – the fact that it’s abnormal to fly to JSUMC from 6th & Madison means that there is almost certainly more to the story than what is published here.

  4. #3,It’s up to paramedics to evaluate the patient and decide if they get flown or not. In this case serious trauma to the legs is probably an automatic fly. It would take longer than 20 minutes to drive to Neptune on a weekend afternoon especially if there’s traffic and dealing with those construction zones on Parkway North.

  5. anonymous you need to stop. You don’t know what happened. And traffic on a Saturday afternoon Really! They did what they are trained to do. Save a person. Under any circumstances

  6. My prayers to the pedestrian. And to those who are so quick to put up nasty comments without knowing facts, you clearly need a life! I pray this type of tragedy does not occur to one of your loved ones! To the victim,,Title 59 applies, file your notice of claim timely.

  7. 7, 8, and 9
I specifically said I don’t know the details and therefore asked someone involved to clarify, not people who have no idea.
#7, even if patient has to be extricated and the helicopter is on the ground, it still takes more time to fly than drive.
#8, there is no automatic fly. Per NJ fly or drive guidelines, less than 20 minutes drive, 20-30 decide, >30 minutes fly. And please don’t give the prolonged extrication reason. You still have to consider the time from when the pt is in your hands. And it normally does not take more than 20 minutes to drive, even at that time.
#9, Save a person under any circumstances is absolutely correct. My point here is that it is sometimes worse for the patient, not better to fly. Again, I will say I do not know the circumstances so I ask someone who was there to explain.

  8. We need turning lights, so that vehicles slowly can tutn without beefing the on coming traffic. The hill that is sixth street affects drivability.

The buses make fast wild wide turns and the drivers are animals, I see it daily, they never yield to pedestrians at the corner of 6 and Clifton.

  9. wow…does anyone use their brain!?! unless you have been in a situation, be smart enough to keep your comments to yourself!! If you have ever witnessed a person be hit and run over/dragged by a 1 ton vehicle and stop on top of them….you shouldn’t be commenting……God Bless the first responders/paramedics who clearly saved this women!!! ♡♡♡♡♡

  10. I feel terrible and hope this never happens again. That being said lets not all jump to say that we need major changes and new traffic lights, patterns signs etc. It’s entirely reasonable that even with the best systems in place, accidents and tragedies will happen
