Wild Turkeys Cause Damage to Lakewood Residences

turkey lkwdWild turkeys are being blamed for damage to properties in Lakewood, DPW Superintendent Tony Arrechi tells TLS.

The Public Works department has received multiple such calls, Arrechi says, but there’s not much that can be done about it.

“As they are indigenous to our area, there is nothing that animal control can do to trap or relocate,” says Arrechi.

Adult wild turkeys, which can weigh upwards of 20 pounds, can destroy flowers and vegetable gardens, leave their droppings on patios and decks, and roost on cars, scratching the paint.

Turkeys can become aggressive during the breeding season, occasionally even charging, threatening, and acting aggressively toward people.

You can prevent problems by discouraging wild turkeys from becoming too comfortable on your property.

• If turkeys begin feeding under hanging bird feeders, remove the feeders until the turkeys leave the area.

• If turkeys are causing problems in your yard, install motion-detecting sprinklers.

• Wild turkeys typically will not enter yards with dogs.

• If confronted by a wild turkey that has lost its fear of humans, an open umbrella may help steer it out of your path.

  1. A few years ago, when I got up in the morning, went to let my dogs out, and there must of been almost 100 wild turkeys. I thought I was still dreaming. They walked around my back yard and left within 15 minutes. Never saw them again. It also happened at my job in Howell. It was kind if interesting. They didn’t do any damage.

  2. I’ve seen turkeys in the Monsey area in people’s yards, never heard there were problems with them. Unfortunately my neighborhood has become more populated since I moved here many years ago and I see less wild life than I used to in my yard. I love wild life and I wouldn’t mind having some turkeys here. I just saw some last week in a park in Mt. Holly. They were scared of me and ran away very quickly when I wanted to take pictures of them.

  3. turkey is delicious! roasted, smoked shish kebabed, sunday afternoon barbecue and dont forget Thanksgiving dinner.

  4. Place pumpkins (and assorted Halloween decorations) around your property, they’ll think Thanksgiving’s around the corner and head for the hills!
