AT&T Hit With $100M Fine Over Misleading ‘Unlimited’ Data Plans

iphoneAT&T Mobility LLC has been hit with a $100 million fine for offering consumers “unlimited” data, but then slowing their Internet speeds after they hit a certain amount.

The Federal Communications Commission said Wednesday that the company misled consumers into buying plans they believed would give them unlimited ability to send and receive data, including Web browsing, GPS navigation and streaming videos. But the FCC said that once the consumer receached a certain level, that data would be slowed down significantly, at speeds lower than advertised. Read more in NBC.

  1. I became a victim of this practice.

Had one heavy month, but was not doing anything intense like streaming video.

Not only did they slow it down (throttling), but it was slowed down to a crawl. My phone was barely functional until I rode out the month & they brought me back up to speed.

You cannot call that an unlimited plan when they cripple you to such a level.

    Hope they are found guilty.

  2. AT&T is the worst company ever deal with it
They actually shut off my Internet for a week until the next Month start Started while I have unlimited!!!!

  3. having been with AT&T since unlimited data was offered I will say that I you have to really overuse it to be throttled. & the few times that it happened all it takes a phone call to get it set back at no charge. all in all the unlimited data for those of us the are grandfathered as it is no longer available is the best deal going, at the price of $30 a month.

  4. Josh, they start throttling at 5GB. I am usually well within the limit, but one month went over.

The point is, how can you call a plan unlimited if you start throttling over 5GB to a point that it slows to a crawl. That is basically a 5GB plan.

Very deceptive & poor business practice.
