The new Lakewood shuttle, known as the “L”, has been seeing an increasing number of riders – currently seeing between 500-500 daily, Lakewood Economic Developer Director Steven Reinman tells TLS.
“We have been very pleased with the public embrace of this new service and the increasing ridership,” says Reinman. “Currently, 500-600 riders a day utilize the “L”, based on our estimates. Once fare collections begin, we will be able to have more precise counts and data collection.
Next Sunday, June 14, 2015, will be the last day of the free test run.
Starting June 15th, fares of $1 will be charged per ride. Exact change will be required, as drivers do not carry money, Reinman says. A multi-ride punchcard will be available for $10 from the driver and soon on the shuttle website, www.lakewoodshuttle.com.
This card will also provide a discount in the form of some additional rides above the $10 paid for.
An updated schedule will be available shortly. The schedule will more clearly lay out all stops and provide a more accurate idea of times for each stop.
Last week, the Township added five new stops, as the demand continues to rise, Reinman says.
“Demand is high for expansion and discussions are underway for how to effect that expansion and what routes are the next ones to come,” says Reinman.

Does a dollar a ride cover costs, or is the rest susidizd by the tax roll?
I can answer that. Even assuming ridership stays at 500 a day ( I bet you it will fall once the charge kicks in), the bus will bring in $500 a day. It costs way more than $500 a day to operate the L bus system.
And didnt you notice how traffic has thinned out because of the bus? Uhhh, well maybe not.
