Reader-submitted: “Mommy, the Bus was almost 100 degrees”

school bus lkwd tlsMy son walked into the house last week with a red face, almost as if he’d been running a marathon in the heat. I asked him what he did, to which he answered, “nothing, I just came off the bus.”

We’re in 2015, yet school buses that transport children sometimes for 30-minute plus routes aren’t even equipped with fans? Let along air condition systems.

“It was like 100 degrees in there. They just leave the windows open,” my son said, as he doused a couple cups of cold water.

I know when I sit in my car and leave the window open in the 90 degree heat, it doesn’t do much. Now try sitting in a stuffed bus with dozens of other sweaty children‎. It’s just not right.

I think it’s time bus companies seek to rectify this‎ and show the children a bit of a respect, instead of them sitting in the 90 plus degree humid weather, not uncommon for Lakewood summers.

A concerned mother.

  1. It is an issue. We can write letters to the papers about it, but I doubt it will solve anything. Like they say “if you don’t want to pay for it, don’t complain”

  2. i dont under stand why they get away with this its almost as bad as leaving your child in a car with the windows closed

  3. When I went to school I had to ride the non-aircoditioned bus for one hour. Then I went into the non-airconditioned school for the day. After which I had to ride the same bus back home. After 75 years I am still alive. Sure, at times it got really hot but I lived with it. I’m quite sure the children can live with it now as I did then.

  4. There was no air condition on my bus and yet I waited so badly get home. But it a transportation issue. It not worst try working for FedEx or ups or usps. They got no air condtion either. What do you think about bus driver feel too??

  5. No A/C on the bus? That doesn’t even make the cut for a concern about school, long routes a drag yep, but not a full blown issue. When the kids get home they have no problem playing outside in the heat.

  6. I rode a bus that wasnt air conditioned and got through it.
Lots of schools didn’;t have air conditioning and you had to sit in a classroom all day.
It builds character. Today every kid is so coddled and babied that when they grow up they think everything is coming to them.

  7. I agree why in the world is there no ac?!!yeah u can survive so why do you have ac in cars and houses my grandparents didn’t have…. And survived!! Get rid of your car your cellphone your refrigerator…. My great grandmother survived?? And by the way bus drivers have fans were in 2015 buses should be manufactured with ac totally agree!!!!

  8. Most kids are not on the school bus for more than 45 minutes. But it is a issue which there is a solution for and it is not putting air conditioning in busses the solution is making sure your kids have enough water to stay hydrated through out the day..
and another point is that unless sitting in traffic the busses are usually moving and not sitting in the same spot for to long so there is air going through the bus and the chances of children dehydrating on school buses or getting heat strokes is hardly heard of..
The moral of the story is just make sure your kids have enough water to stay hydrated!!!!!

  9. I bought my kids these little hand held fans for peanuts @ the westview shop…really just circulates the hot air but better than nothing

  10. when people complain about things that are viewed as normal, it weakens their argument when they complain about things that are actual problems.

Kids have been going on buses without A/C for decades. Like others mentioned, there are many people who don’t have A/C at work. Not sure why they don’t open the windows, make sure your kids have drinks, they live.

  11. Ur not gonna change anything by complaining. But here’s a suggestion that will keep ur child cool. Freeze a water bottle and wrap in foil it wi stay almost frozen and he can sip on the way home to keep from over heating.

  12. I dont know why people wouldn’t buy a car or house without a c or window units. What’s the big deal? Momstly people die from the heat.

  13. We need restrooms on the school buses too. My child was squirming out of his seat. The bus driver hollered at him for dancing on the bus. After sitting back down he was humiliated in front of his peers as he left a puddle. He was on the bus for about 50 minutes on the way home. I’m tempted to send him with an emergency cup. Does anyone have any other suggestions?
