More than 120 Additional State Troopers on Patrol this Holiday Weekend

njsp tls 2There will be more than 120 additional troopers on patrol statewide this holiday weekend, assisting motorists and looking for people not wearing their seatbelts, aggressive driving, speeding, DWI, and illegal fireworks. Additionally, troopers assigned to the detail, as well as normal patrols, will be looking for signs of fatigued and distracted drivers, who can be as dangerous as impaired drivers.

Many people will be traveling long distances this weekend to vacation or visit friends. If you are one of those people, have a plan. Check your antifreeze, tire pressure, oil level, and gas tank before you leave. Pack water and some snacks in case you break down. Plan stops for rest along the way or take turns driving with a passenger for longer trips.

“The holiday program is designed to save lives by improving driving behaviors,” said Lt. Colonel Patrick Callahan, Deputy Superintendent of the New Jersey State Police. “Although statewide crash fatalities are down 7.6 percent from this time last year, we know we can do better. We want everyone to get to their destination safely and be able to celebrate the holiday weekend responsibly with their friends and families.”

The holiday period will run from Thursday, July 2 at 6:00 p.m. to Monday, July 6 at 6 a.m. There was just one crash that resulted in a fatality during the same period last year, and alcohol and drugs were not a factor.

If you plan to spend the weekend in New Jersey, leave the fireworks home. It is illegal to sell, use, or possess any kind of fireworks without a permit. Each year, emergency rooms are filled with patients who are injured by illegal fireworks.

Troopers will be on the lookout for any and all suspicious activity, but members of the public are our best defense against terrorism. You can anonymously report suspicious activity by calling 1-866-4SAFENJ, dialing 211, or via email [email protected] If you see something, say something.
