PHOTOS: Two Lakewood Residents Help Troopers Save Unconscious Driver who Crashed into Swamp off GSP

1Two Lakewood residents at the right place at the right time Tuesday evening sprung into action to save a young driver’s life.

At around 8:15 PM, a driver traveling southbound on the Garden State Parkway in Sayerville reportedly crashed into the center guardrail, and then bounced off, landing in the swamp on the other side of the roadway.

A Lakewood resident witnessing the incident immediately phoned police and stopped to help, another Lakewood resident who arrived shortly afterwards told TLS.

Troopers arrived moments later and ran into the swamp, finding the driver unconscious in the vehicle.

“The officers tried using their batons to break the window, but couldn’t,” the resident – who wished to remain anonymous – told TLS. “So the guy ran to his car to get his metal crowbar from his tire kit and brought it to the troopers,” who used it to successfully shatter the car window.

The male driver, said to be approximately 25 years old, was pulled from the window and brought to the road where troopers initatiatied CPR together with the Lakewood residents trained in first aid, the Lakewood resident said.

Moments later, emergency services arrived and transported the patient into the ambulance, where they continued with CPR.

State Police tell TLS the driver was transported alive to Robertwood Johnson Hospital, though they could not provide any further information on his condition.

“I can’t believe he’s alive,” the resident who performed CPR on the patient told TLS. “I’m glad to be a part of the save.”
