ocpo crime unitThe Ocean County Prosecutor’s High Tech Crime and Digital Forensic Unit have found that Ocean County residents are being targeted by a phone scam in which the caller claims they are collecting fines on behalf of the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office.

The scammer in each instance identified themselves as a law enforcement officer or an attorney and demanded money to prevent arrest. The scam is typically from the following number: 888-609-1428. The HTCU has verified numerous complaints across the country of scam calls originating from this number.

“All Ocean County residents are advised to simply hang up when receiving calls of this nature,” the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office stated. “The Office of the Ocean County Prosecutor will NEVER; I REPEAT NEVER call soliciting money or requesting payment of fines over the phone.”
