During the summer months, Lakewood residents couldn’t help notice the Special Children’s Center 24/7/365 JOIN-THE-JOG signs around town. But the Center’s “24/7/365” mission was even more apparent during the recent Yom Tov season.
In order to ensure that parents could prepare for the hectic season with peace of mind and enjoy quality time with their other children, the Center really went all out. Each Erev Yom Tov featured respite sessions; yom tov days had ‘Pirchei’-type groups, with volunteers picking up children from home for hours of activities. Chol hamoed saw a major full-day trip to the Chol Hamoed Spectacular by Human Care, featuring Uncle Moishy, the Twins from France and much more. Isru chag featured a full day of activities, with transportation and meals provided of course.
The Center’s amazingly dedicated volunteers are the quiet heroes who make all this possible, giving the children a wonderful time and lots of special love, while giving parents desperately needed time.
It’s not just Yom Tov season, it’s all year round. Because special needs never take a break. Neither do we.

The Special Children’s Center is an outstanding organization, whose volunteers and employees are saving families every day – and not only the children that they service on premises. I expressed immense admiration to a friend and neighbor who is raising her large family with patience, love, and skill despite the huge amount of energy and time her challenging special child demands.
