Homeless People Taking Shelter in the Lakewood Police Station

tent on lakeWhat better place than a police station to feel safe. In recent weeks, multiple homeless people have taken shelter inside the Lakewood Police station lobby, police say.

Police say that during the evening hours have found homeless people with blankets and their belongings sleeping inside the lobby of police headquarters on 3rd Street.

The homeless camp in Lakewood closed about a 15 months ago, and some of the remaining residents have taken up shelter in tents in and around Lakewood, according to former Tent City head Steven Brigham.

Police say there is now an ordinance in place that will make it illegal for homeless people to take shelter inside the lobby after hours.

“What we’re going to do when we see below zero temperatures, I don’t know yet,” a police supervisor said.

  1. Maybe they should have left Tent City up and then the homeless would not be camping in the police station. I wonder what they did with the land.

  2. Folks need a safe and warm place to stay. There is so much development happening in Lakewood, perhaps a very small portion could be set aside for homeless people.

  3. But yet they stay building but cant build a homeless shelter for these people. There r people out their who is 1 paycheck from becoming homeless

  4. Build a homeless shelter??? That’s one one way to encourage pole to be lazy and BECOME homeless! Get off your seat and make a life for yourself! You can’t rely on charity to survive!

  5. Seems to me the people commenting on this post are simply one sided. I wanted to try to balance things out.

Homelessness is truly very sad and must be dealt with. However, don’t start with, they should’ve left Tent City up, they should allocate some of the development for them etc etc…. Any other bright ideas? It has been my understanding that everyone from Tent City was offered assistance MANY times. Most accepted it, eventually-when they realized that Brigham wasn’t gonna save the world and Tent City would really come down. Some did not accept the offered help. That was their choice and their problem to deal with, not the Police Depts and certainly not the landowners and developers of this town. Maybe some people in the county can step up to the plate?

  6. I agree with joemoe. It’s truly sad that people are in a situation that they find themselves homeless. However, it’s also true that tent city residents were offered assistance. It’s also true that history has shown that by increasing things like homeless shelters, people do become less motivated to find alternate arrangements . Yes, people need a place to stay, it’s a basic need (there are churches that allow temporary stays but even there, there r rules and some people have trouble following

  7. How about get a job people. I could have been homeless but instead I got a job at 14 and kept working until now currently 27 and have $40,000 in the bank and a nice house and two cars!!!!

  8. Helping them will only encourage more illegal immigrants. Illegal immigrants should not be allowed in in the first place.
We all see how much trouble they are causing us!
