The Lakewood Police Department next week will have five new police officers, bringing the department personnel number near an all-time high. The officers, four males and one female, will be graduating the Ocean County Police Academy. Once graduated, the officers will go through an approximately ten-week training with an FTO (Field Training Officer) before hitting the streets solo.
The new hires would bring the number of police officers to 128 officers, Police Chief Rob Lawson says.
The Chief says the highest number of police officers the police department has had, was approximately 132 officers, though he would like to see the number higher.
“I’d like it to be at about 140,” Chief Lawson tells TLS, saying neighboring Toms River has approximately 160 officers for a smaller population.
