Brick PD: Teen Walking on Sidewalk Struck by Driver Looking at her Cell Phone

texting while driving results tls picDistracted driving can kill, and Brick Police are reminding drivers of just that today, after a teen walking on a sidewalk on Lanes Mill Road was struck by a distracted driver.

At about 12:45 PM today, Officers responded to Sally Ike Rd and Lanes Mill Rd for a pedestrian struck by a vehicle.

On scene it was determined that a vehicle struck a 16-year-old female that was walking on the sidewalk near the intersection.

The driver was traveling southbound on Sally Ike Rd and was in the process of making a right turn onto Lanes Mill Rd southbound when she was distracted by her cell phone.

“When she looked down at her cell phone she impacted the curb and struck a street sign,” police said. “After striking the street sign she continued and struck the juvenile who was walking on the sidewalk. The juvenile was thrown several feet and suffered a leg injury.”

Brick Police First Aid and Medics responded and transported the juvenile to the Jersey Shore Medical Center.

The driver was issued a summons for careless driving and operating a vehicle while using her cell phone. Officer Geskey is investigating the crash.
