Senator Singer has introduced a bill that would allows filing of birth certificate to be delayed for religious reasons, for up to 15 days after birth, in order to allow for the naming of the child.
According to New Jersey State law, after childbirth, a parent has up to five days to name a child and submit the birth certificate. This becomes problematic when a boy is born, and parents wait until the Bris to give the child’s name.
Under Bill S-1066, just introduced, an accommodation will be given for religious purposes, and allow up to 15 days to submit the birth certificate.
Agudah New Jersey’s Director Rabbi Avi Schnall welcomed the bill’s introduction.
“We thank Senator Singer for introducing this bill providing religious accommodations for parents filing their birth certificate,” Rabbi Avi Schnall told TLS. “Senator Singer’s sensitivity to the needs of the community is evident in this bill, as it has been throughout his career.”

thank you senator. i am currently dealing with this headache of notarizing and submitting a request to name my boy, after the hospital named him “no name”
Same here and my child is already 3. They are impossible to deal with.
No religious reason why you can’t write name down on a paper before the Bris.
Or am I wrong?
I make sure to know he name in the hospital and put it down on he birth certificate saves a lot of headache
Thank you
This will help many people not only the frum Yidden
To Chaim – unless of course, you don’t nexes know what by then what the child’s name will be. We actually gave my son, whom we planned to name for my grandfather, My grandfather’s legal name. Turns out, we did not end up naming for that grandfather for a whatever reason and we were so glad we hadn’t put his Hebrew name on the birth certificate as it would have been a huge headache to have it switched..
Anyone care to share what a Bris is…rather than just assuming all readers already know.
