EXCLUSIVE: Off-duty Lakewood Police Officer Saves Elderly Choking Victim in Restaurant

meyer sAn off-duty Lakewood police officer is being hailed as a hero today after saving an elderly choking victim inside a local restaurant, TLS has learned.

Stephen Meyer, (pictured left) on the force for just two years, was off duty and enjoying lunch at a Howell restaurant when he saw the manager and another run over to an approximately 80-year-old man who was choking on his food, sources told TLS.

But with no luck on the Heimlich Maneuver and the man still choking, Officer Meyer identified himself as a police officer and asked to give it a try.

Meyer performed the Heimlich and managed after the second thrust to dislodge the stuck item. The man was then sat down and given a drink. Emergency personnel arrived moments later, but the man refused further medical attention.

TLS spoke with Officer Stephen Meyer who says it was a great feeling.

“It felt great to be able to help someone and that I was in the right place at the right time,” Meyer said.

One of those full of pride today, is Officer Meyer’s father, Lakewood Police Captain Gregory Meyer.

“The Howell officer phoned me at the department to make us aware of his heroic act,” Captain Meyer, a 30-year-veteran told TLS. “It certainly is nice not only as his father but that one of our officers sprung into action while off duty and made a difference.”

The hero’s wife was no less proud.

“I’m so proud to call him my husband,” his wife Danielle said. “Even if he doesn’t think it’s as big of a deal as me and the people at Applebee’s do!”

It seems saving lives and making a difference is in the genes.

  1. As someone who witnessed the caring of Officer Meyer when he showed up at an incident, I can truly attest to what a special person he is, as a professional, and also as a human being. Lakewood is so lucky to have him on board. I am not surprised that this heroic act was accomplished through him. And of course his dad must be real special too! We appreciate everything that you do for us!
