A five-year-old boy is being credited for saving his grandfather’s life in Lakewood.

On March 18, a 55-year-old grandfather, Michael Smith Sr., was watching his grandchildren Ahmar, 1, and Naseem, 5, from Brick, when the unexpected happened.

“My 55-year-old  father passed out suddenly, hit his head and collapsed to the ground and had a seizure, “Michelle Smith, the boy’s aunt, relates to TLS.

Naseem heard a big boom – the sound of his grandfather hitting the floor, going unconscious. Naseem sprung into action.

“He called out for my father but he did not answer,” Michelle says. “He saw that something was wrong and he went to get help. He went to my parents’ neighbors across the street but noone answered.”

The five-year-old then ran to another next-door neighbor, and told them something was wrong with his grandfather – “he is not moving”. He had no medical history, Michelle says.

The neighbor immediately called 911.

Lakewood EMS responded and treated Michael before transporting him to Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus. Michelle says her father suffered a similar episode after he was released from the hospital, but is now recovering.

“If it weren’t for my nephew, there’s a possibility my father would not be here today,” says Michelle. “My nephew, our hero Naseem, saved my father’s life.”

Naseem’s mother, Brenda, shared those sentiments upon learning of the incident and heroic actions of her young son.

“I’m proud of my son for saving our father’s life and being a brave hero,” she said.

What an amazing young man!
