El Al Passengers from Lakewood Arrive home after Hadlokas Neiros

elal plane tlsPassengers from the delayed El Al plane on Friday arrived home just minutes before Shekia, TLS has learned.

As reported on Friday afternoon on our news alerts, the plane – which took off about nine hours after initial intended departure time – landed approximately 5:25 PM at Newark Airport.

With the help of Misaskim, Customs and Port Authority officials worked expeditiously to accommodate the Frum passengers to ensure they get it home in time for Shabbos.

By 5:40 PM, most of the Frum passengers were off the plane, and by 6:05 PM, the passengers from Lakewood were out of the airport, the family relayed to TLS.

The Lakewood family hopped into a waiting car, and were on their way home.

“They walked into the house at 7:15 PM (Hadlokas Neiros was 7:10 PM) and even took showers before Shkia!” they said.

Misaskim, who is credited for expediting the process an getting passengers home in time for Shabbos, strongly encourages passengers to ask such a Shaila before putting themselves in a situation that could come to Chillul Shabbos.

  1. Very nice that they got home and took showers but the lesson that should be learned is do not fly that close to shabbos what if they would Chas vishalom land on shabbos would you be publicized the story??I have heard of people who got off that plane Thursday because it’s to close to shabbos just like there are crazy campaigns about driving same should be about flying

  2. There are lessons to be learned in this story as in any story but with no one knowing any of the real circumstances around this one I think is unfair for anyone to cast blame or make assertions or even to make suggestions. Let’s leave this for what it is; a story with a nice ending, plain and simple. (no pun intended).

  3. we will also like to thnks the elizabeth\hillside community and yeshiva of elizabeth where over 50 families sighned up in case the passengers could not make it home to stay by them and eat the yeshiva put out over 30 extra beds and meals

  4. Besides for the chillul Shabbos, which almost took place, there were so many people who are baalei chesed who were inconvenienced by this situation, i.e. misaskim, families who offered to put up, etc. It’s true that we don’t know what made those people stay on the plane after such a long delay, but we should learn for the future.

  5. Is it an Inyan to publicize something close to chilul Shabbos R”L?
It is not according to Halacha – see Igros Moshe, and other Seforim regarding this.

Are we losing are sensitivities for Shmiras Shabbos, Chas ViSholom?
Can we rely on el al?
Some soul searching – Cheshbon HaNefesh, must be done.

  6. To Cool Masmid, why didn’t my comment make sense? I thought that these people who got on the plane knowing it would land in Newark very close to Shabbos. caused great inconvenience to those people who had to work hard to get them through customs & out of the airport to get home in time for Shabbos. They also cause inconvenience to others who tried to help them out. Although they may have had a good reason to remain on the plane even after it left E”Y so late, they still caused a great deal of trouble for others and were nearly mechallel Shabbos. I still think that makes a lot of sense.

  7. R’ Yanky Meyer from Misaksim was instrumental in helping out. many didn’t fly when they realized how late they would get in, there were only 200 on board. – they got them rushed through customs, and had extra bag handlers to bring them in right away. The plane landed 5:30 at 6:15 everyone was out. – He stressed that it was wrong and they shouldn’t have stayed on the flight according to halacha. – those that had to travel should have stayed at the local families that offered it. there was no need to come to lakewood after hadlakas neiros.
