Following Lakewood Civilian Safety Watch’s Halachah and Emergencies shiur for its members, the organization held a follow-up lecture, this time specifically for Shabbos and Yom Tov patrol members, addressing the halachos that pertain to them and the situations in which they may find themselves.

It was an attentive audience that sat engaged at LCSW’s headquarters, avidly taking in the words of lecturer Rabbi Moshe Rotberg, author of Emergencies in Halachah and member of LCSW’s Rabbinical Shabbos Advisory Board. He discussed how to interact with the volunteers, agencies and the Jewish community in different situations that may arise, the difference in halacha between Shabbos and Yom Tov, the distinction between life threatening emergencies and non-life threatening emergencies in regard to what one may do on Shabbos and Yom Tov among other very relevant topics.

In the spirit of ongoing training and their ever-eagerness to help the community in whatever way they can, the group of selfless volunteers paid close attention, asking questions, clarifying and solidifying their commitment to LCSW and to Lakewood.

Lieutenant James Finnigan of the Lakewood Department addressed the Shabbos members as well, thanking them for their assistance in keeping the community safe and for their positive interactions with the police department. He launched into an important discussion on procedures of the visual patrol and their zones, the relevant policies and how effective of a deterrent they are.

This Pesach, the members are prepared to put in extra hours patrolling the streets of Lakewood at all hours of the night, keeping Lakewood safe as we walk to and from the sedarim, go away for Yom Tov, and everything else this holiday entails. And they will do so armed with the knowledge that will empower them to go above and beyond the call of duty for the Pesach-observing community.
