The Senate has decided not to take any action on the gas tax bill, which would have raised the tax by 23 cents.
Today is last day of sessions until the end of the year.
The tax would mean an added burden to commuters.
“It would mean another $50-$75 per month for me – I fill up about three times a week,” one Lakewood commuter told TLS.
Another commuter said the tax increase would cost him about $50 more per week, as he fills up every day.
The gas tax increase was supported by Governor Christie, who proposed a sales tax cut to offset the increase.

Don’t get Christie’s thinking.
Why add a tax & offset it with a cut.
Unless once tax is added, when the cut gets abolished, we are left holding the bag.
We pay enough in tolls & taxes to cover road improvements.
Koodos to the Senate for not passing this burden.
Thanks to all you NJ senators for standing up to that big bully Christie.
If you want to raise the tax on gas you do it a few cents every few years, not just to slap a fat tax on us all at once. There is a reason we don’t live in that money hungry State of NY. Use brains!
You’re going to save lots of money once you can’t get to ny because the bridge is out. Staying home is cheap!
There are bigger problems much bigger, than the gas tax
But davka something like this comments section goes wild
In the world now, the bad outweighs the good
People immediately say’ well, what could we do about it?”
אז ס’טוט וויי, שרייט מען
Christie is over the hill. Time to retire
why do they need .23 how about .10 i think that would go a long way
Christie was way off with his math.
Glad it was repealed. For guys like us, where most of our re non-taxable, like food and clothing, the 1% sales tax cut would have a very limited benefit. Also wanna point out, some of the math in the article is off. Filling up every day won’t cost u $50/week extra. Unless you have, like, a 35 – 40 gallon tank !! Happy driving !!
* most of our purchases are non-taxable, I meant to say. Sorry.
It will come back
Oh well. Now they have another excuse for not widening route 9… No money in the trust fund…
What are you people talking about? The Politicians didn’t repeal anything, they didn’t stand up to Christie, it was a simple thing, they were called out for their lies about this tax and decided NOT to bring it up for a vote. They were called out for saying if you give us $.23 tomorrow we might reduice your sales tax in 2 years by $.01. Do you think the Democrats will keep that promise? When have you ever gotten a tax reduction from a Democrat? There were so many lies in the Bill that once called out on it they had to back down. How bad was the Bill, the House voted on it at 2AM so that no one would know who voted for it. Cowards!!!!!
How about these high property taxes were pay??? That’s a real problem.
