Reader-submitted: Why is there not a bigger uproar about this proposed gas tax?

traffic gsp tls (4)I live in Lakewood and for the past five years I have been commuting every day about 120 miles (60 miles each way) to get to and from work. I work in NJ as well, but there is no NJ transit systems that I am able to take to get to work and there are no other employees at my company that I am able to commute with, so I am left to driving my car every day to work.

This week, the State Democrats in the New Jersey Senate are proposing a 23 cent gas tax hike. My wife and I are hard working “Middle Class” citizens who barely make enough money to cover all the bills every month. We make too much money to get on any “programs”, and have to pay for health insurance about $11,000 a year out of our own pockets. This added gas tax will hurt us financially in a big way every month like I am sure it will hurt most other “Middle and Lower class” citizens.

I am not sure why there is not a bigger uproar about this new gas tax. This new gas tax will hurt the Middle and Lower class citizens the most. The State Democrats are saying they need this new revenue to help fix the roads and bridges, but the last time I drove on the GSP (which was this morning), I paid two tolls going northbound. If they mismanaged the State fund that fixes roads and bridges, they should come up with a different way to find the revenue and not just add this gas tax or up our property tax.

Do you remember the last time a bank customer mismanaged his bank account and the bank manager said “don’t worry, we will tax and take the money from a different bank account”? Of course not! So why do the politicians have a right to do that?!!

Thank you very much for reading my opinion and I hope this gets the community to call the state politicians and have them vote NO on this new gas tax.

  1. If they commit to use the new revenue to widen route nine then I’m all for it. Aside for enhancing our quality of life in Lakewood, the amount of money saved on gas by having quicker navigation will more than make up for the gas tax hike.

  2. Call your state representative – Bob Singer at (732) 987-5669 and let him know this is a very important issue to his constituents

  3. i agree with you

on the answer to your other question why its not bothering everyone. This is due because in Lakewood you are lucky to be paying a lot less per gallon of gas then NY chicago or Florida Etc… so the persons Psychological mind doesnt get upset & instead makes him feel lucky even if prices do go up

  4. Totally agree! Also what about the people driving around in electric cars or high fuel efficient cars if its all about paying for the roads where is their fair share in paying for the infrastructure? And what if I only drive locally, I’m not even using state roads why am I getting pinched? Just curious why don’t they just raise the tolls, are they trying to promote “clean energy”??.. better yet where is the toll money currently going? is the .23 cents guaranteed to only go for the roads or in a few years it will be going towards some pension?

  5. I think it is the E-Z Pass mentality. I remember travelling the NJ Turnpike from Exit 3 to Exit 18 for $1.70. When you had to put out the cash you realized what you were spending, Now with E-Z Pass, you spend much more with nary a thought (this is also the credit card mentality).

People: wake up, realize what is happening and COMPLAIN!

Hopefully, Christie will veto this if it goes that far. Look ahead and elect another Republican governor next time around.

  6. I agree 100%.

Senator Singer if you are reading this. Please vote NO on raising the gas tax.

1: New Jersey has the one of the HIGHEST property taxes in the entire United Stated

2: New Jersey has one of the HIGHEST income taxes.

The only thing we have (had) cheap is the gas tax.

    Why ruin it?

How do all the other States manage without being the highest in all taxing categories?

  7. There is nothing you can do about the gas tax PERIOD!!!!!!! You keep putting these clowns in office, you get what you pay for! They can and will do what they want.
The only way to change things in NJ is to change the elected people.
    Stop complaining and start voting!!!

  8. @josh I totally agree! Great gas prices with full service. That’s one thing I like share with visitors.
Tolls are bad enough going anywhere in or out of state.

  9. My company is really wishing for this tax increase. They are pushing all employees to call their congressman and tell him you want this bill. If it goes through all engineering firms will make a lots of $$$$.

  10. OK the Tax and Spend Democrats want us to believe that the gas tax will only cost about a cup of coffee…. not all of us buy coffee at Starbucks!
They want us to believe that them cutting the Estate tax will cancel out this Tax. well 95% of us will never be affected by the Estate tax, but 100% of us will be affected by this tax. On the flip side 100% of the Democrats will benefit from the elimination of the Estate tax. They will not be affected by the gas tax they have Government cars. They say out of state drivers will pay their fair share by buying our cheep gas. At 25 to 37 cents a gallon we will NOT be cheep gas anymore so why will they cross the border to buy gas? The Democrats don’t want a property tax increase because THEY will have to pay it as well.
Bottom line the boys in Trenton need to learn how to spend our money, stop giving it away to your cronies.
The next time any of these politicians come up for election VOTE THEM OUT!!!!!!
