FIRST REPORT: Out-of-town child not accepted to Lakewood school brought to school anyway – see what happens next

classroom-lkwd-tlsWhen parents from out of town failed to get their child accepted into the Lakewood school they wanted, they decided to try a novel idea – but it failed miserably.

Sources tell TLS the parents tried numerous times to get their daughter into a particular elementary school in Lakewood, but were not accepted.

But that didn’t stop them.

The parents reportedly went out and purchased a uniform for the child, and on the first day of school brought the kid in.

Upon realizing, the principal told the child to come with him into his car, and -wait for this – he drove her home!

One veteran school owner we spoke to said they’ve received ‘threats’ from parents in past years that they would “just show up” at school on the first day, but that didn’t happen. He added, that had parents done that, he would probably respond in a similar fashion.

  1. I have mixed feelings about this story. On the one hand it looks bad for a school to reject her and drive her home. On the other hand I have no info about this girl or family to know if she belonged in that school to begin with. Not every girl belongs in the school they applied to.

  2. Instead of driving her home maybe try to find a diff school for her. Maybe bring her to askinin to help her out. But to bRing her home like that!!! ITS UNACCEPTABLE!!!!! she feels like a failure!! Then u wonder y we have teens at risk???!?!!!!!

  3. The parents left the principal no choice. He is praiseworthy for handling the situation in such a mentchlich fashion!

Of course, the parents acted very inappropriately regarding their respect for the school and its administration.

However, their gravest error was placing their own child (presumably aged 5-7) in the middle of this battle in a way that all but certainly squashed the child’s self-esteem and confidence.

While the parents WANT what is best for their children, they must actually DO what is best for their children.”The road to Gehenom is paved with good intentions” is actually a yiddeshe concept. See Rav Chaim Shmuelevitz in one of the sichos about preparing for yomim noraim.

  4. Not sure what makes this story newsworthy just another example of senseless bickering both on parents and schools part . As a side point nebach on the girl for sure probaj nebache on parents for feeling the need for such senseless action which will definitely scar their child and nebache on administrator for being forced into such a bad situation

  5. Remember hearing stories from ur grandparents about this one lady that came from Russia to Isreal and all schools were full to capacity so they said we can’t accept ur child. But the mother didn’t give up and every day went and stood outside by the doorway with her son for THE ENTIRE DAY until they saw how much she wanted a Jewish education for her child so they took her in!

  6. What lesson did the parents teach this child. The reason this child wasn’t accepted is not mentioned in the article. Was the school at maximum capacity? Did the parents try to apply to other schools? Don’t be so critical of the school The whole story isn’t mentioned here and I might not be something the public needs to know on either parties part.

  7. I think if anyone isn’t in school the parents should get the uniform and on the first day of school, the should go to school like everyone else. The principals would bring them home but maybe they would realize how many kids are out of school
with that said someone should open up a uniform gemach just for little kids

  8. Lets clarify one issue. Was the child not accepted to any school in Lakewood or where the parents simply stubborn and insisting on one specific school? If it was due to no school accepting the child then the school administrator is very wrong and he will have to give a din vchechbon for that. If on the other hand parents had another choice just choose not to send there, then parents are to blame. This includes the choice of sending to new schools. The typical excuse of not wanting new schools because you want “established” schools is nonsense. Most new schools hire experienced teachers and principals so noone is a freshy. Most parents who don’t want new schools simply suffer from an image problem because es pest nisht

  9. Obviously the school is wrong because the school is always wrong. (sarcasm) How can an institution allow someone in if they weren’t accepted? Would any organization allow such a thing? Can you work with parents that if they don’t agree with the school’s decision then they do what they want?

Parents need to work with a school and vice versa.

  10. Aha so in 15 years when her chosson drops the shidduch her parents will drop her off with her gown on because they need HIM. Give me a break, what foolish trick they tried playing because as stated in article that they wanted that specific school. Yes it does matter that there from out of town, other communities warn you get your kids into school before you move here.

  11. What are schools supposed to do that certain RE Brokers are doing a great job enticing Brooklyn parents to move to Lakewood? (Some with 3-4 children already in School) The schools are bursting through the seams. And give preference to Lakewood families rather then Brooklyn families especially if they need 3 spots in a specific school.

  12. unfortunately in this town parents are forced to take drastic actions when dealing with schools. I dont agree with how these parents dealt with their situation. A poor neshama was broken and who knows what the reprucations will be .
on the other hand, Administrators, principles and anyone else involved in decision making are impossible to get in touch with. They will cowar behind their secretaries and never be available to have a conversation. The agmas nefesh they put parents through They will make you beg, grovel and throw away any pride you thought you had.Parents dont sleep nights not knowing what will be with their children. We are talking about young beautiful pure neshamas.
How do we expect our children to grow into mentchen when the ones being mechanuch them dont know the basics of derech eretz.
There’s a chesbon up there..the tears you have caused to feed your pride!Shame on you.

This is not to all the wonderful askunim who go above and beyond to help these children and parents out.May they be blesses.

  13. I dont judge the parents for a second as this was an actual thought of mine as well and I almost was led to do the same thing. When my two daughter from were not in school two days before school was starting I actually considering doing this exact move as we were desperate and with no help how to work within the very complex Lakewood system who would not accept our pure children. The school was right for us and they even told us that!! BH we got in to another school 12 hours before the first day but dont judge as parents do what they do out of desperation and I feel bad their story did not end happily as ours did.

  14. Yankel is so right, the Realtors are selling people the Lakewood Bridge. It is NOT easy getting into a school & it is Not easy finding a tenant to cover half the mortgage & so on…

  15. New School parent is, of course, 100% right. But, even if not, what the parents did was 100% inappropriate and I’mk usually a school basher but in this case, they had no choice. And, btw, in the last few storieas Ive seen about housing shortages where brokers are trying to woo the Brooklynites to move to LAkewood, to their credit, the brokers DO say, make sure you have your kids enrolled somewhere before you pull the trrigger.

  16. Yankel,

Just one pointer re schools busting thru the seams. Here is what those busting schools should do. Leave a few spots for the kind of kids that have harder times getting into school. Since the busting schools generally have a few classes per grade, they can absorb 5/ 10 children who for whatever reason can’t get into schools easily i.e. divorced parents or just parents with no pull. The other more stable children can attend one of the many new schools. And due to the fact that the new school will primarily accept normal stable children, that new school can take off the ground and maintain a nice parent body. But this all a bit off topic.

  17. To New School parent – why should the “normal” families send their kids to an unknown new school? They should be able to choose their kids school too and prefer to send their children to an established school with a good reputation.

  18. She should’ve driven the child to a police station and called the parents to pick her up from there. Leaving a child unattended in a public area (without someone responsible for the child’s well-being) is pure neglect.

  19. They should have let her stay that first day & the principal should go down to the parents house & make it clear that if she comes again we’re going to take her right home , & that should help the at risk crisis.

  20. Just like the driving situation…we are all forced against our will and against our usually calm and decent mentality to act in an irrational behavior. The system must change!! We are put in an impossible situation and then left to just deal with it and be blamed for everything…very sad.

  21. it’s the “elephant in the room”

We made a system to turn the town/city into an

    eternal Class system

for some chevras’ who get to the top benefit

of course, we’ll pretend it for good purpose under the sun but that?

Those who sent to the schools
that “are good for them” are supposed to just roll over ?

this is what sinas chinom is?
