TODAY: Public meetings in Lakewood to address Route 9 issues; Make your voice heard

school bus traffic rt 9 first day busing 9-7-16[See earlier suggestions from readers here] Township residents, businesses and property owners along the Route 9 corridor in Lakewood are invited to an open house today, September 28, to learn about and comment on proposals to improve congestion and reduce crashes along the corridor.

The North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority (NJTPA) is holding the meeting as part of its 12-month planning effort to identify spot improvements, corridor-level treatments and access management regulations for Route 9. The study aims to establish a long-term vision for the corridor; develop a package of low-cost, high-impact safety and operational solutions that can quickly be implemented; and develop a formal Access Management Plan to aid municipalities in regulating future development along the corridor.

The meeting is being held in the Lakewood Municipal Building Courtroom at 231 Third Street, Lakewood. There will be two sessions, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. and from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., and the event will feature three presentations – at 1:30 p.m., 5:00 p.m. and 7:15 p.m. – offering an overview of the Route 9 Corridor Study recommendations.

The open house-style meeting will feature information stations with maps detailing the proposed improvements, information about the Access Management Plan and an opportunity for the public to provide feedback on the recommendations.

A similar meeting was recently held for Toms River to review recommendations for the portion of the Route 9 corridor in that community.

The input gathered from these meetings will be included in a report, which is expected to be issued later this year.

The Route 9 Corridor Study’s Working Group includes municipal officials from Lakewood and Toms River, as well as representatives of Ocean County, the New Jersey Department of Transportation, and NJ TRANSIT.

  1. *Until* there is a reasonable working solution in place, ALL new building projects need to come to a halt.

The quality of life in Lakewood is declining by the second and it’s clear that we do not stand a chance to salvage the already deteriorating situation without unifying as a single voice against ALL new building projects. Period.

If you agree with me, please leave a comment with your initials.

    Thanks!!

  2. Correct. It is a too little too late. The infrastructure has been shattered by a city that has been granting building permits with abandon with enough concern about how it will impact the quality of life and more importantly, safety. Its a great idea to put a stop to it now so that the people don’t suffocate but as we know…who is the smart man? He who sees into the future.

  3. This town is being overdeveloped without the proper infrastructure. It seems like the Planning and Zoning boards have complete disregard for the existing zoning laws as they just approve everything that comes before them unless a lawyer is there to oppose it.

We should not allow this to continue.

  4. A petition should be made to the county not to approve any building on county roads as any construction approved by zoning/planing on county roads still needs their approval.

  5. The planning and zoning boards are appointed by the Township Committee. So they are in effect an extension of them.

The Township Committee is elected, it is in our hands to make a change.

  6. couldn’t agree more-the builders as well as the planning board that isn’t planning for Lakewood’s future very well-are bringing the standard of living down dramatically

  7. They are proposing to make a center two way left turning lane. That is suicide for the amount of traffic that we have here. They need to widen Rt 9 and have 2 lanes in both directions. Don’t give us bandaids.

  8. Lakewood is unique town that offers many things that can’t be found in other communities. Because the infrastructure is not sufficent that is not a reason for people starting new familes not to be able to raise their family in our community. Growing up in Lakewood 40 years ago a large portion of rt 9 north of Lakewood was a 2 lane highway & it took forever to get through Howell, Manalapan etc. Houses & businesses continued being built & the infrastructure eventually was improved. The same can be done in Lakewood.

  9. To 17 The surrounding towns are much larger, have more open space and existing homes available for sale. they offer everything Lakewood does with the additional benefit of tranquility.

But I appreciate you taking your time from you busy day of studying architectural plans, to comment.

  10. Steve,

I half way disagree with you. I say developers should be allowed to build but it should be limited to Lakewood residents only. No investors or outsiders can move into those houses.

A city has a mandate to provide affordable housing to its residents. That’s why I say we can’t just totally ignore the massive affordable housing shortage in our town. However, i do agree that it should be limited to local residents only.

  11. There is no housing shortage. There are too many houses a avail for sale in Lakewood is addition to all of the neighboring towns.

The housing being built is not for Lakewood residents it is for NY residents.
