Toms River Township officials: No permits necessary for Sukkah up to certain size

img_4527The Toms River Township announced that no permits are necessary for Sukkahs (temporary huts for the Holiday of Sukkos) up to a certain size, and are accommodating for those in need of larger ones.

“The building code allows temporary structures of up to 120 square feet (10×12) which are exempt from construction permits,” Township officials said.

And in cases where a family would like a sukkah in excess of 120 square feet, two separate structures are acceptable.

“There is no provision within the Uniform Construction Code requiring a specific distance between temporary structures. Each structure would have to be independent; four walls, or in most cases three walls with the fourth wall being the dwelling,” the Township said.

There are approximately 100 Frum families from Lakewood who have moved into Toms River within the past two years.

  1. “And in cases where a family would like a sukkah in excess of 120 square feet, two separate structures are acceptable.”
Sounds like Toms River would like separate sukkos for men and ladies!
Why not just realize the need and accept it. Why restrict to the point of ridiculousness? We are talking about a temporary structure!! Would a party tent need to get a permit as well for over 120 sq feet?

  2. Jk. I would not be complaining. Say thank you! If you need a larger structure just follow the rules and apply for a permit. Be a mench and act as part of society.

  3. On behalf of all Toms River residents we would like to thank the Toms River Township and all those who were involved in settling this in advance.
May Toms River be an example to other Townships of how a Township can accomidate and work together with it’s religious residents. Hats off to you!

  4. Is there a town in the US, that requires permits for a succah?!

    Why should Jackson be different?

There is no problem following the law, the question is are “we” being singled out.

It reminds me of the stories we used to hear of the Lower East Side in the 30’s !

  5. Jackson has a bigger problem, they don’t even let the ppl daven in someone’s house on Shabbos. It mindboggling how many nice, large inexpensive houses there R in Raintree, Hearthstone or Chestnut for sale and ppl are running to Jackson where they don’t allow ppl to congregate for prayer in a private house.

  6. Jog a thon, what incidents are you aware of? Curious as we’ve recently moved to Jackson, and the first Similar thing I have heard of so far was the toms river tumult but nothing about jackson.
