Committeeman Licthenstein: Tragic incident on Rt 9 should highlight to the State need for improvements

committeeman lichtenstein (2)Lakewood Committeeman Meir Lichtenstein says he hopes the recent tragic incident on Route 9 serves as a strong reminder to the State that improvements are desperately needed.

“This should highlight to the state our request to expedite the dualization and pedestrian improvements requested for Route 9,” Committeeman and veteran Hatzolah member Meir Lichtenstein told TLS.

There isn’t currently a request for a traffic light in the area of Presidential Estates – where a pedestrian was critically injured Friday night – but other sidewalk and pedestrian safety improvements were requested.

As earlier reported, approximately two years ago the township bonded millions of dollars for sidewalk upgrades in various areas around town.

The Township is also working with JCP&L to improve lighting conditions around town – including replacing bulbs and adding new fixtures to enhance visibility.

Pedestrians are also encouraged to use reflectors whenever possible. It can make the difference between life and death R”L.

  1. It should also highlight some of the dangers that will come about if you make it a four lane highway. That means pedestrians will have to cross four lanes of vehicle traffic, which will presumably be traveling at a higher rate of speed to the improvements to traffic flow. It should also serve as a reminder of how the current four hundred units being put up right next to presidential will bring added foot traffic and with that more potential for such unfortunate incidences.

  2. A few years ago, there was a gvt contract to put up sidewalks on some streets between South Lake Drive & Central Avenue. We begged them not to do it. There’s little walking traffic on these blocks. When we saw they were proceeding, we begged them to only do one side of the street. They refused. So my small block of 8 houses got sidewalks on both sides of the street. The trees that were knocked down in their wake were never replaced as promised.

  3. Committeeman Lichtenstein is, of course, 100% right. It is incumbent upon any normal, local or state government to protect its citizens. That is and always should be priority number 1. If route 9 is not safe to pedestrians at night, the State must, MUST make the necessary improvements. In a timely manner. Case closed. Meir for Mayor !!

  4. If you must on the street, please please wear reflectors. It’s almost impossible to see pedestrians when it’s dark and there is no lighting on street. Reflector bands are not that expensive and it could save your life or your child’s life.
