An alleged drunk driver in Lakewood had his keys taken away from him by another motorist, who then handed them over to police.
Police tell TLS at about 9 PM last night, a resident phoned police after he’d taken away keys from a motorist he’d been following and appeared to be drunk.
Sources told TLS the civilian blocked in the car, and then reached into the alleged drunk driver’s vehicle and grabbed his keys.
When police arrived, they found an empty car with the driver nowhere to be found. The keys were handed over to police.
Is this actually allowed to be done legally to reach into someone else’s car and grab their keys ??
You wouldn’t ask this question if you or someone you know is the victim of this or any drunk driver.
Do not do this! This is dangerous because you do not know how the person might react — especially if they are under the influence of alcohol. The person that took the keys could have been seriously injured or worse. If you suspect someone is driving drunk, call the police and give as much information as possible. Do not try to play the hero and try to pull over the person yourself. They could be armed, they could be belligerent or they could run you over.
Be safe and let the police do their job.
