BREAKING UPDATE: 5, including 4 children, struck by vehicle on Madison Avenue (PHOTOS)

Five people, including four children, were struck by a vehicle on Madison Avenue this afternoon, officials confirmed to TLS.

The incident happened approximately 4 PM, when a mother was reportedly crossing Route 9 at the crosswalk with two children in a carriage, and two children next to her.

A vehicle turning onto Madison Avenue apparently failed to yield to the pedestrians, and struck all of them.

The mother was not injured, three children were taken into the nearby Pediatric Affilliates, and one child was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center. Injuries are not life-threatening, police said.

Police are investigating.

  1. I was right there after the accident. I didn’t see it but was there before police arrived. I agree that pedestrians have the right of way. This area of Route 9 is very dangerous, I travel often on this road. People constantly step out in the roadway, cars are always veering into the other lane to avoid. It’s really chaos and doesn’t surprise me that more pedestrians aren’t hit. I believe the Jewish community should help out with infrastructure (proper crosswalks and signs) to help the congestion, it’s getting really bad. I recall on a few occasions I had to hit my brakes to avoid hitting someone and that’s going the speed limit. Be on your toes and steering wheel driving there

    • While I agree with you about the danger, if the Jewish people started painting crosswalks and hanging signs they’d probably be arrested. Ultimately, the township needs to act and take any appropriate measures.

  2. Was this crosswalk at a traffic light or in middle of nowhere? I think the non traffic light crosswalks are outdated and extremely dangerous on today’s high volume Route 9. Refuah Shleima to all involved.

  3. Oh those poor kids and their mother. Please keep us updated. Prayers to all of them. It’s just too congested in this area for both, pedestrians and traffic. Sometimes it really is hard to see people crossing. I drive so slow, so afraid I’ll hit someone, driving the cars behind me crazy. Again, pray they are all OK.

  4. Over building with zero regard for infrastructure will unfortunately lead to these types of incidents.

Unknown who if anyone is at fault wishing everyone a speedy recovery.

  5. For everyone’s information as per Rabbi Miller Zt”l when you see an ambulance passing say a tefila for a refuah for whoever need it even if you don’t know the name
May we not need to pray for such things any more

  6. Tom- the township is responsible for safe roads not the Jewish people!! Every resident, Jewish or Hispanic or African American, has a right to be free from injury or death..
