PHOTOS: Fire evacuates Downtown businesses

Multiple offices in the downtown were evacuated this afternoon after smoke filled the building, officials said.

The fire started from mulch outside, but “spread down the retaining wall and across the side of the building in the crawl space,” a fire official said.

Crews had to break open a stucco wall to access the fire, the official said.

South Clifton Avenue is shut from Route 88.

  1. Great job by career crews in stopping this fire from consuming the whole building. A small mulch fire turned out to be more when a thorough investigation by the Capt into the crawl space revealed active fire! Volunteer companies arrived to assist with primary search of the building and overhaul in the crawlspace. Great job and good hustle by all of LFD!
