Attorney Michael Inzelbuch: Some facts about SCHI

The recent situation at SCHI has had many parents worried about the fate of their children’s education.

In response to numerous inquiries – and in response to many inaccurate and inflammatory statements in the press – special education expert attorney Michael I. Inzelbuch offered the following information about the school (documentation readily available from the New Jersey Department of Education and other public sources).

1- The SCHI School is not the most expensive private school for the disabled in New Jersey. The Tuition rate for SCHI is set by the New Jersey Department of Education -not the school itself nor the Lakewood Board of Education.

2- SCHI is approved by the New Jersey Department of Education, both as to its curriculum and finances.

3- SCHI, like every private school for the disabled, is independently audited each year with the results of these audits reviewed and certified by the New Jersey Department of Education. (SCHI is not a nonpublic school like a yeshiva or, for example, the Monsignor Donovan School in Toms River.)

4- Numerous districts from around the State send children to SCHI – not just the Lakewood Board of Education.

5- Children of all faiths, colors, and creeds have been offered and accepted the SCHI school as a placement.

6- The current allegations are against an individual – not the SCHI school.

When further asked about children requiring the SCHI School, Inzelbuch stated:

“Not every child needs an out of district placement. Not every child needs to go to SCHI. It’s an individual decision made by the IEP Team or a Judge, if litigation is filed. However, if SCHI is the appropriate placement for a classified child, the current situation should have no effect on a school that is an indispensable resource for many, many special needs children and their families from throughout the State of New Jersey for over 22-years.”

  1. Thank you Michael for providing this info. Very nice of you to take the time to do this. Thanks for all your endless work for the Special Needs Community.

  2. Important information. Thank you Michael for always being there for the children in need of your service par excellence.

The town of Lakewood is fortunate to have you serve it.

  3. Regardless if SCHI is the “most” expensive, the tuition cost has been increasing significantly, it is not unreasonable for the tax payers to be given an explanation, a statment, some basic info..SOMETHING, each time the cost drastically increases. Whether the statement comes from SCHI or The DJOE, it would be helpful. (Also, it is basic marketing.)

Michael does a great job seperating the issues here. The issues of the individual in the leadership position of SCHI is not in any way intertwined with SCHI itself.
His “case” affects him, his life, not SCHI.

Thank you Michael I. Inzelbuch for a well written article.
