Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles responds to your ‘Ask The Mayor’ questions: Can we consider making flashing traffic lights at night?

The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].

Question:

Good afternoon Mayor,

I drive a lot around town all day, and at night especially. For some reason, I feel like the traffic lights don’t sense my car and end up waiting really long for it to turn green for me.

I was wondering if you would consider making some of the traffic lights flashing after 11pm. Examples Williams & Prospect, Sunset & James, Sunset & Central, Cross & James, etc. I understand the larger intersections wouldn’t work, but I did go to school in Edison NJ where they do switch a bunch of smaller intersections to blink, and it’s great.I would really appreciate it if you can take a look in to this.

Response from Mayor Coles:

I sometimes have the same problem. I’m not sure turning them to flashing after a certain hour is the solution. I think we need to make sure the cameras and other sensing devices are working properly. Please get back to me with some of the intersections that give you the most grief, and I will have them checked out to make sure they are functioning properly.

Thanks,

Ray

  1. Mr. Mayor,

Thank you for your response, but I fail to see why the proposed solution wouldn’t work. It is my understanding that when traffic is light a 4 way stop would work quite effectively. While I agree with you that there may be faulty traffic light sensors, I believe that should serve as an adjunct to flashing lights and not as replacement.

  2. Hurley and cedarbridge. Terribly long red when coming from route 9 and waiting for left onto clifton and no cars in sight. Flashing red would be a great solution.

  3. Thank you Mayor coles for addressing this topic.

I can relate to the one who this question.
A few nights a week I’m on the roads in Lakewood … There is no reason why traffic can’t turn into 4 way stop signs after 1:00AM

    Examples:
    Clifton x Kennedy
    Clifton c County
    Princeton x County
    Clifton x 4th
    Clifton x 2nd
    Hurley x Cedarbridge
    Forest x 14th
    Forest x 9th

(I’m leaving out the lights on rt 9 bec. the response will be “it’s run by the state”)

Mr. Mayor, please seriously consider the letter writers suggestion.

  4. As good as you think a flashing signal would help late at night, I do not think it can work in Lakewood. Everything except an actual red light signal means to just speed through around here. A blinking light on Sunset and James would mean cars flying through the intersection. Believe me. The esteemed Mayor is right. Let’s make the sensors work right. I seemed to have noticed that the turning green signal on Central and 9 has shortened for some reason. Not a good thing. Might be something with the sensor there. Also, the same turning signal on s much shorter on Sundays. Sunday is a full traffic day in this town. Thank you Mayor.

  5. the worst light is the 9 and Alexander for some reason late at night the Alexander side is an extra long green much longer than by day

  6. @shalom
We are talking about at NIGHT. Lakewood roads are 2AM are very quiet. There are almost no cars on the road at that hour. Try it one night. .. Go for a drive at 2am and let us know the results…

  7. I agree with the letter writer and, with all due respect, Mayor Cole’s did not give a proper answer. And I disagree with Shalom 100%. The streets are empty after 12:00. I also agree with bobby c : Courtney and 9 is absolutely nuts, day and night.
