The Township Committee this evening approved a $1,000,000 grant to help restore the athletic programs cut from the budget.
The District Superintendent, Board of Education President and other Board of Education members, as well as public school students, were in attendance to show support for the Township’s decision. The Superintendent and Board President spoke and thanked the Committee for their support.
As earlier reported on TLS, the money was originally to come as a loan, but was reportedly changed for legal reasons.
Last month, the Township also covered the cost for the restoration of the Lakewood High School team.
As earlier reported, the state also kicked in with an $8 million loan to help cover the deficit. All teacher positions were also restored.

Why is the public school athletic program more important than improving public recreational facilities? Especially when the majority of children in lakewood do not benefit from this expenditure?
sign your kid up to a public school and sign them up for a sport then.
Although I am NOT a fan of this township committee, I would still support this decision. Kids need positive things in their life, and athletics is an excellent way for many kids to grow and shine in many ways, i.e. self esteem, and that is what will keep them on a continual path of growth.
This is a public forum so please think twice before responding.
Sports is a very important part of the public school program.Ask any coach what sports does for the students. Let them enjoy and be successful!

I agree that music is important and I believe so did the Board of Education when they approved the continuation of the music program/activity in the upcoming budget, one of the few activities that made it through before the cut.

They should devide the funds between all the children in the township. Why only the public schools children which are the minority of the sum total.

Why do they get to decide what to do with my unreasonably high taxes. How about build a park with that money in town? Or at least have the town vote. It’s our money.

What the article doesn’t say is that it also is restoring the special needs programs in the private schools.
I think it’s important to clarify that to make a note to both segments of the community are being helped by this grant.
