Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles responds to your ‘Ask The Mayor’ questions: Utility Work

The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].

Question:

Hello Mr. Mayor:

I’d like to join the bandwagon of requests on road conditions. Adams St. between Miller road and where it ends – its entire current length – is in deplorable shape… although each piece has different issues.

Up top between Miller and Van Buren was torn up by NJAWC last September or so. They ripped up well more than half the street to add sewer. When they repaved… they did not even run a roller over it. As such… the new tar sunk in and kind of created these up and down hills and waves that are uncomfortable and tiring to walk on… let alone ride a bike. As far as cars… let’s just say I don’t need to head over to Jenkinson’s in Pt. Pleasant Beach for a roller coaster ride. I shudder to think what it is doing to my shocks and struts. I know the synagogue there has some upcoming planned construction… so I don’t know it is the ideal time to do full city sponsored repaving… but it has been some 10 months or so since NJAWC ripped the street up and they really did not live up to their responsibility when they closed it up.

Moving closer to Van Buren and then the stretch from there to Reagan Ct and beyond there are endless pot holes and there is a little bridge almost at the bottom of the hill that keeps falling apart. Chunks come off the side. Every few months they patch it up a bit and it gets bumpy, but it is only a slight upgrade form the teeth chattering experience it has several months a year. This has been an issue all 6 and a half years I have been in that neighborhood. Is there any relief we can look forward to?

Thanks so much to you and to TLS for this forum to express our concerns and needs! – Zachary

Response from Mayor Coles:

Hi Zachary,

I appreciate you letting me know about this.

When utility companies run lines or do major work they are required to do the repair, usually in 2 steps. When the repair is first done, they fill and pave over it with the expectation that it will settle. They are supposed to come back in about 6 months and do a final paving and sealing job. We have an ordinance being introduced to tighten the way these repairs are done to make sure that the repairs last and do not add to more trouble down the road. I have forwarded your letter to the engineering department to have them investigate this street opening permit and get NJAW back to complete the repair.

I am also asking them and our public works department to investigate the other issues you raised and get back to me with their recommendations. I will make surd that it is added to or road improvement program.

Thank you

Ray
