UPDATE: LPD releases suspect description in frightening Lakewood incident

The following is an update to the frightening incident in Lakewood, first reported on TLS yesterday.

Statement from LPD:

On August 14, 2017 at approximately 3:45pm, Officer Eric Micallef responded to a Stirling Avenue home in response to a suspicious circumstance involving 6 year old child. Upon arrival, Officer Micallef was informed that the incident had occurred approximately 30 minutes earlier.

Officer Micallef was advised by the victim’s father that while his daughter was outside and playing unattended, she reported to him, that she was approached by what she describes as a young black male who was riding a bicycle.

The suspect then picked her up and placed her in the rear passenger seat of an unlocked parked car. He then locked the vehicle with the child inside before leaving the area in what was described as “casually riding away”. The child reported that she remained in the vehicle until a friend of hers rode by and noticed her inside the car and let her out. The friend was not on scene when Officer Micallef arrived.

The suspect was described as a young black male, average build, long curly hair and wearing black pants. Anyone with information is urged to contact Det. Michael Mooney Jr at 732-363-0200 ext. 5341.

  1. Does not make sense. How did other child let her out of a locked car? Children should not be unattended period. You dont live in a bubble.

  2. There is something so strange about this story. Most 6 year olds know how to let themselves out of a car. My daughter at 4 years old knew how to do that. Why wouldn’t this girl be able to do that herself?

    • If the child lock function was on, you cannot open the door from the inside. It prevents the child from opening the door when you are driving and the child falling out.

  3. Please Teach our children that if they ever Chas veshalom find themselves in a locked car they should toot the horn constantly until someone will hear them.

  4. if chas v’eshalom, someone is locked in a car with the child safety lock on, the front doors aren’t locked. Parents, teach this to your children.

  5. Is it possible that “curly hair” in the description means dreadlocks?
Why didn’t the little girl try to let herself out of the car? My guess is that she was terrified he would come back and try to harm her.

  6. I am from out of town and I get so frustrated and angry when I see children playing outside by themselves! Parents- it is NOT SAFE! Even in a development where you think your children are safe from predators (which is debatable), they might fall down or get hurt and if you are not watching them who is going to be there to help them!?!?
Parents, this culture has got to change! Most of these stories that we read about on Lakewood scoop and elsewhere have one common denominator – the child or children were not being watched.
Parents please! Take care of our most precious children. It is your responsibility to keep them safe – NEVER let them outside alone!

  7. Child lock was on, as initially reported

Also are we really asking questions on a 6 y/o that was just kidnappped and placed in a “locked car” for being frightened and not thinking of what the adults are of tooting a horn or climbing to front seat???? She was probably scared!!!!

Either way she shouldn’t have been outside for that long “herself”

There’s gotte be cameras in the area, does anyone have cameras even a block away? Search it to see if someone matching that description drives by on a bike

  8. Esther in #11 I agree with you 1000% not just a hundred I wrote about it in lKWD SCOOP many many times. And at this point I believe everybody here in LKWD knows how much bubbie Zelda loves Lkwd. I do have this particular complaint : Parents I know you are all BARUCH HASHEM very busy but thats not an excuse to leave young children outside by themselves even for one minute. you are playing with fire. And its not save for a 10 or 9 or 8 year old to watch a younger child. I know not everybody reads the LKWD. scoop , I wish somebody could post my comment in the Shuls and all over town. Have a good Shabbos everybody .And listen to this old lady . You will glad you did,

  9. Child locks only work on vehicles rear doors on any car, so why wouldn’t a six year old just climb to front of vehicle and get out. This whole thing sounds odd, something missing..
