LPD officer tracks down and returns Mexico Yarchei Kallah student’s wallet, with the help of the Lakewood Shopper and TLS (PHOTO)

A student from Mexico here for the Yarchei Kallah got his wallet and ID back abut an hour before leaving back home – thanks to a Lakewood police officer.

The student had lost his wallet during an event in Lakewood, and was missing his ID, credit cards, cash and more.

An honest woman found the wallet, and brought it to Lakewood police headquarters. At headquarters, Officer Mercado accepted to wallet, and instead of waiting for it to be claimed, decided to actively find its rightful owner.

Remembering that TLS ran a photo album of the group in Lakewood, Officer Mercado reached out to TLS to see if we could track down the student. We then reached out to the Lakewood Shopper, who had been involved with the group during their stay.

Moments later, the student was tracked down as he was about to depart back to Mexico. The ecstatic student immediately went down to headquarters to claim his wallet – and grabbed a photo with the officer who went out of his way to reunite the owner with his important possessions.

  1. Nice story! From what I hear about the police in Mexico I don’t think a story like this would have a happy ending if it happened to a foreigner in Mexico

  2. God bless the LPD. For all the bad press law enforcement gets these days, it’s truly heartwarming to see the true colors of those wonderful people who risk their lives every day for our safety.
