Expanded Roadway will Help Toms River and Lakewood Travelers

Tired of making a U-turn on Vermont Avenue at Route 70 if you want to continue traveling north into Lakewood? A longstanding transportation project in Lakewood’s Master Plan will solve that problem.

The Vermont Avenue Extension, an expanded 40-foot wide roadway with sidewalks on the west side for its entire length from Route 70 to Chestnut Avenue, will rectify this situation. With the completion of the roadway extension, Vermont Avenue will provide a new north-south travel corridor for motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists between Toms River and Lakewood.

Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles said, “This is the first step in alleviating many of the traffic concerns in the southern end of town. When complete, the Vermont Avenue Extension will offer an alternate north south route, easing congestion on both New Hampshire Avenue and Route 9.”

According to Terence Vogt, PE, PP, CME,* a principal and regional manager at Remington & Vernick Engineers, a Vermont Avenue ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, October 26, at 10:00 a.m. at the Wawa on Route 70 and Vermont Avenue. The sponsors of the Vermont Avenue Extension are Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles, Committeeman Mike D’Elia, Lakewood Township Manager Tom Henshaw, Senator Robert Singer, and Justin Flancbaum, Lakewood Township MUA (LTMUA).

Along with the proposed road improvements, Lakewood MUA water service improvements will also be installed in the project area, including a new eight-inch water main that will connect two existing mains, one located along Route 70 and the other located along Chestnut Avenue. This water main extension will improve service and reliability to local LTMUA users.

  1. Will there be a traffic light or 4 way stop sign installed at the same time on the corner of Chestnut and Vermont or are we just creating an additional spot for congestion?

  2. “…ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, October 26…” Notice no year was mentioned for this project. I would surmise it will be completed about 2025.

  3. Great so let’s build some more units there. Just make sure they are safe for fire. We don’t want another disaster in southern Lakewood.
