Statement from Sec. Mnuchin and Gary Cohn on Tax Reform

Today, the House of Representatives passed the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, bringing us one step closer to giving hardworking Americans the relief they deserve. The Senate Finance Committee is also making progress on its companion bill, and we hope they will soon advance it to the floor for a vote.

The current tax code hurts American families, workers, and businesses. Our reforms will create a system in which they are treated fairly. Our workers will be able to keep more of their hard-earned money, and our companies will be able to create more jobs, raise wages, and successfully compete in the global marketplace. We will also bring back trillions of dollars in American wealth that is currently parked overseas—money that can be used to invest in America’s workers and American industry.

With these tax cuts—combined with the President’s efforts to cut job-killing regulations—our country is poised for historic economic growth.

We will bring back our jobs, we will bring back our wealth, and as the President has said many times, we will bring back our great American dreams.

  1. The tax code is designed to effect public policy, the most important of which is to encourage marriage, children and the ownership of property, the foundation of any republic.

The Republican plan that increases the standard deduction at the expense of itemizing, that encourages home ownership and the deduction of local property taxes, child related expenses, charitable deductions and mortgage interest, caters to a new generation of Americans for whom marriage, families and home ownership are less important. It will decrease the ratio of home owners to tenants since a landlord can deduct his taxes and mortgages above the line.

Tax policy encourages values that otherwise, in a free county, the government cannot impose.

The Democrats must seize this opportunity. The press has been speaking of the “tax cut.” This will soon become known as the “Republican tax increase.”
