Here’s an ‘in case of emergency’ tip a Lakewood resident discovered while traveling on the Thruway

A Lakewood resident driving the Thruway from Montreal, discovered information that could be useful to travelers.

While driving along the New York State Thruway approximately 2:30 AM last week, the driver noticed his gas tank was near empty.

He searched Waze for the closest gas station along the Lake George stretch, and headed there. But the gas station was closed. He then searched for another station, and that too was closed. It turns out all the gas stations in the area were closed.

Realizing he may soon get stuck on a dark road in winter weather, he phoned State Police.

The dispatcher instructed him to head to a Sunoco gas station located at approximately exit 28, and although the station was shut, there is one gas pump – the one closest to the road – which works with a credit card.

The driver made it just on time, and was successful in filling up his vehicle using the one emergency pump.

  1. Wow years ago did a trip with some other bochurim to a chasunah and it started snowing heavy and we were running out of gas. Also all the stations were closed but we came to this Sunoco station, which was dark and closed, butd I decided to try to buy gas anyways and it worked, I always wondered how it was possible if the place was shut, maybe a worker forgot to turn off a switch… Now I know the truth.

  2. Thanx, TLS and this driver for sharing this valuable tip with us. This is so< SO important for the many people travelling this and other weekends. So, which part was the tip, you can call State Police for gas help or the Sunoco station has one pump open ?! Thanx , again & Ah L:ichtigen Chanukah to all !!

  3. I’m sorry to be the first Doubting Thomas over here but someone has to do it. This story makes no sense to anyone who drives the area.

The writer talks about being on the Thruway in the Lake George area. The Thruway goes nowhere near Lake George! The New York State Thruway heads North out of New York City to Albany and then turns West toward Buffalo. Lake George is approximately 50 miles north of Albany. The Thruway goes nowhere near Lake George.

Take it one step further, exit 28 off the Thruway is somewhere west of Schenectady and NOWHERE near Lake George or that stretch of the Northway.

The bottom line is, if you have good information to tell somebody as far as directions are concerned, please please please make sure you get it right otherwise you might send the person to Chicago when he was only asking to go to Toms River.

  4. To the moron above, some people mistakenly think that the whole 87 all the way to Canada is called the thruway.

Really not so hard to understand what it meant

  5. What the highway is called is really irrelevant.

The point of the story is plain and simple and clear.

If you need gas, don’t assume that the pumps at a gas station don’t work if the lights are off and the station is closed, cause it seems that some of them still will work with a credit card.
Good advice, thanks for posting the story.
