Police this morning said they charged the driver arrested for striking and killing a pedestrian in Lakewood.
At approximately 9:50 pm last night, officers were dispatched to the area of Ocean Ave and Pearl Street after receiving calls that a person was just struck by a motor vehicle.
Upon arrival, Officers found a Hispanic male, later identified as 53-year-old Lucas Rodriguez De La Rosa of Lakewood, with what appeared to be life threatening injuries. He was transported to Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus where he unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.
While still on scene, Officers located a red, 2002 Dodge Stratus with obvious damage to the windshield and front bumper. The driver, who remained on scene, stated he was traveling East on Ocean Avenue trying to locate the entrance to a local business. Realizing that the business appeared to be closed, he continued on his way. When he turned back to the road, there was a pedestrian right in front of him. Tragically, he could not avoid striking him.
Further investigation by the Lakewood Police Department Traffic Safety Unit, the Ocean County Prosecutors Office, and the assistance of the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department CSI Unit, revealed that the operator, identified as, 24-year-old Juan Soriano Ramirez was determined to have a suspended license. As a result he was arrested and charged with, Causing a Death While Operating a Motor Vehicle with a Suspended Driver’s License. Ramirez was later transported to the Ocean County Jail in lieu of Bail.
At this time the investigation is ongoing and additional charges may be filed. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Lakewood Police Department or the Ocean County Prosecutors Office.
So illegal driver kills pedestrian and the NJSP will have reason to do ticket blitz in Lakewood. …………
How do you know he was illegal?
It was illegal for him to be driving – his license was suspended
He had a suspended license, that makes it illegal for him to drive. Duh!
@Lauren In the article it clearly states “as a result he was arrested and charged with, causing a death while operating a mother vehicle with a suspended Driver’s License”
That’s what you call an illegal driver!
@ lauren
It’s written clearly in the article that he was driving illegally.
Driving with a suspended License is illegal…
Chaim, obey the law and you’ll have no issues
His license was suspended. That means illegal driver.
Yes suspended license makes him illegal but it’s clear that the victim walked in front of the car. So legally it’s the drivers fault because he’s suspended but reality is victims fault. So everyone calm down
@mark, mother or father vehicle?
Was this Hispanic male driver also in this country illegally? Is he one of the “Dreamers” which the democrats just shut down our government over, until our federal representatives turn him into a “legal” citizen??
Their is a lot of people here in Lakewood who drive with no license and still use there cell phones and drive while they are under the influence
He didn’t pay his child support and got his license suspended that does not make him a careless driver perhaps it was the pedestrians fault
He should have been charged with operating a vehicle unlicensed and that’s it what does a pedestrian crossing against traffic and getting hit have to do with being licenced or not
