EXCLUSIVE: Lakewood Hatzolah member viciously attacked by Pitt Bull (PHOTO)

A Lakewood Hatzolah member was viciously attacked by a pitt bull today. The Hatzolah member was walking home from Shul, passing a home at the intersection of County Line Road and Tuscany Terrace when a dog came charging at him.

“The dog stopped right near me, and I just stood still – not wanting to run,” the Hatzolah member told TLS. “Suddenly it jumped and bit me on the hand, and when I managed to get it to leave go of my hand, it bit me on my leg,” and knocked him to the ground.

Another member of Hatzolah walking with him immediately radioed for help.

With the dog’s teeth still grasping his leg, the owner came over and began pulling it away, while the other Hatzolah member kicked it – finally getting it to release its bite.

The member – bleeding from his hand and leg – was treated on scene and transported to Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus, where he was given multiple shots and received X-rays.

“I’m sore and in pain,” the member said, adding that he’s concerned that this shouldn’t happen again to someone – especially walking alone.

“If this would have happened to someone walking alone, and nobody to help, this could have been much worse,” the member said.

Describing the attack, the member who helped him told TLS, “If this was Ch’V a child, it could have killed him.”

Police Chief Greg Meyer tells TLS, the dog should have been leashed, according to law. “There was a summons issued, and the dog has to remain inside,” the Chief told TLS.

“We will make sure to follow up with Animal Control and check the dog’s being leashed or fenced in,” Chief Meyer said.

The Chief also wished the member a speedy recovery, and thanked those who came to his aid.

UPDATE 7:25 PM: Police Chief Greg Meyer has personally phoned the Hatzolah volunteer to check up on him and wish him well.

  1. This is another reason why people need to carry guns. Wishing him a speedy recovery. Pits are extremely dangerous. I’m glad the Chief is on top of this.

  2. Why must the owner have such a dog? Pit bulls should be in the same category as tigers, people can train tigers to be calm just like they can train pit bulls… the bottom line is, dangerous vicious animals should not be allowed in peoples houses.

Why can’t the dog owner be fined $1000 or $5000 for the negligence? If the dog owner left his pitbull unprotected, why can he not be fined? Just telling him to keep the dog indoors or fenced that is not enough after the dog went wild and hurt someone physically. Does the oilam agree with me?
In addition, if the dog with one of our precious Hatzolah member, he should be fined double

  4. There’s only one answer for dogs like that.. Good night forever. I’m waiting for all the animal rights whackos to start defending this beast now..

  5. The owner was extremely negligent in the fact that his dog was unleashed. With a pit bull, a breed with a history of vicious attacks, many precautions should be taken when bringing it out in public. A big Refuah Shileima to that Hatzalah member!!

  6. A Summons issued?

Why does the owner get away with just a summons?

Why doesn’t this justify an assault level charge?

If the dog had killed someone, not being leashed, would it just be another summons?

If you own a dangerous dog and leave it unleashed, and it attacks someone in a public domain the charge should be at the level of assault with a deadly weapon

I certainly hope the victim takes his case to the dog owners insurance carrier

  7. Dog must be euthanized immediately. This is an outrage. Does anyone know if the township can make it illegal to have a pitbull in Lakewood? With the amount of kids around they are a constant danger. My neighbor had 2 pits with a 3 foot fence. Ridiculous. A phone call from the chief is nice and dandy but will in no way ever help the situation from re-occurring.

  8. Madison JKFor all the dog lovers and dog protectors and the animal rights religious people, I have a solution for them. Let’s put them all in one room with locked doors with this beautiful pitbull for 6 hours and let’s see what they say after six hours if their views have been changed or not
If it has not changed, no problem, let’s continue for a second six consecutive hours

  9. This owner should be doubly fined. Pit Bulls, by nature, are extremely kind and tame dogs. The ones that are vicous are trained to be that way, for entertainment. So, this put bull owner, did 2 things wrong: he trained a kind animal to be a fighter and it wasnt leashed or fenced in. He should be fined $2,000. Chaya Ra’ah. The owner, I mean. Refuah Shlaimah to the vic.

  10. The same happened to me in a local park, although thankfully the dog just jumped but did not bite me.
I suspected at the time that perhaps the owner had let the dog go intentionally. I wonder if its the same person.
    Does he drive a Jeep??

  11. My friend hired a good lawyer to sue the dog owner in civil court for the pain, suffering and other damages. Unfortunately, this is the only way to “train the owner” to be a law abiding citizen.

The dog should also be put to sleep.

  12. This is frightening. It’s great we live in a town with such a chief who takes action right away. I hope this guy sues the homeowner. This is beyond non-acceptable. This dog should be put down as it’s obviously a dangerous one and prone to attack again.

  13. It’s really time for the township to pass a law about forbidding ownership of this dangerous dogs; Do any attorneys can express an opinion about such a law?

  14. Pit bulls should be illegal in Lakewood, no use for them. You need a companion? Get married! You need protection? Why, You don’t live in Harlem.

  15. I take offense to that statement that all pit bulls should be put down. I have a pit bull and he is 6 years old he is part of my family and has been a great protector to my kids and their friends. He has never attachked anyone and even with kids hat come up to my fence and tease him he never jumped out and went after anyone. You want to blame someone blame the owner not the dog. The dog only knows what the owner allows him and if that owner trained him for bad reasons then the dog thinks it’s ok. I would put my dog with any residents in the area and you would see how docile he would be. Pit bulls have gotten a bad name due to their stance and those that use them for fighting. Not every dog is like that. Sorry rant over

  16. Definitely should be charged with the crime assault with a deadly weapon. Absolutely positively without any doubt. If this would have happened to one of my children my life would be over

  17. I hope the landlord reads this
you’re tenant on white road now has TWO Pitbulls, they frighten our small children when they arrive off the bus and sometimes get out of their cages.
PLEASE TELL YOUR TENANTS TO REMOVE THEM.

  18. @Lakewooder, funny there have been some many stories in the news recently about pitbulls killing and or seriously mauling people….havent heard any involving other breads. Draw your own conclusions.

  19. I would have called the Attorney General tonight to ask him to get involved assuming he hasn’t recused himself from taking on the case but since the Federal Government is on shutdown mode there’s no-one really to speak to…

  20. I witnessed in new york A dog bite someone, A Special police unit came & shot the dog with a dart putting it to sleep, then taking it away for good

  21. Hey pit bull owner, get another breed. Pit bulls are deadly. If I have a gun, just bec. I never shot anyone doesn’t mean It’s not dangerous. Pit bulls are the most dangerous dogs, the only people who don’t think so are their owners. “Oh she doesn’t bite she’s so friendly”. Next thing you know the dogs in the news.

  22. Gut Woch and a refuah shleima bimheira for the Hatzolah member I dislike the comment #22 It is offensive and uncalled for, We need protection in Lakewood too, including from bigoted people,

  23. Agreed it’s horrible dog should not have been loose. But I cringed yesterday when I saw not 1 but a few children hitch hiking on Rt 9 n Cross St. isn’t that illegal. N what parent would allow that with all the crazy people regardless of faith. What if it wasn’t a dog?

  24. And again what if it was a child there r so many kids walking alone all over County Line n so many other streets, babies pushing babies. What’s wrong with this picture?

  25. I believe that pit bulls are a breed that is violent and should be banned in cities and towns They attack without being instigated. The past mayor of Montreal banned them and that decision was met with so much anger, that during the mayoral campaign the newcomer made it an election promise to overturn the ban. Guess what, as soon ss she was elected the pitbull ban was removed.
In this case in Lakewood the dog should be removed from his home and put to sleep. Any owner who allows a pit bull to go unleashed deserves a very hefty fine.

  26. Words can be rabid just like a bite. Concerning medical bills, couldn’t that be worked out w/o court. The dog needs to be better trained. It’s not the dog fault, it’sthe trainer’s.

  27. I had a tenant with a dog, it was at one point let loose, it came after me and som workers… it was a nasty situation. A former police officer that showed up a few minutes after, said he smelled it is a pit ball. He was bitten by one as well. He ordered me to get Rid of tenants because they’re never going to give it up. That’s exactly what I did.
