First Look: Lakewood rolls out New Leaf Pickup Trucks; Coming to Your Neighborhood Soon (VIDEO & PHOTOS)

Instead of ten minutes, the two new Lakewood Township leaf pickup trucks will suck up all your leaves in about fifteen seconds. Patrick Donnelly, the director of the Lakewood Department of Public Works (DPW), says the new leaf pickup trucks should be operational with the next couple of weeks.

Mayor Ray Coles said, “This new equipment will bring more efficiency to the department without having to add staff.”

Instead of multiple pieces of equipment and multiple staff, these trucks are operated by one person, similar to the automated trash pickup trucks that use a single claw. The leaf pickup trucks will run in two shifts: 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.

To make sure the leaf pickup truck can vacuum up all your leaves, be sure no branches are attached to those leaves. Do NOT put leaves in bags! Also do not put leaf piles near your bulk pickup items. As a safety precaution, rake the leaves in a neat pile away from storm drains and curb corners.

DANGER: Never allow children to play in leaf piles. This machine is powerful enough to (CH’V) suck in a child.

  1. Very skeptical if I remember correctly Lakewood had such machines not too long ago and they always seem to break down…what happens if someone puts in branches I mean since when do people listen?

  2. I remember the ones they had years ago. These new ones have a much larger diameter hose that should easily be able to suck up twigs and small branches.

  3. Looks like lakewood is doing something. And it’s a good thing. For all those complainers and kvetchers, stop it it’s enough. The town is try its best.

  4. Took 30 minutes to vacuum leaves in front of one house. Slow as molasses and they left plenty of leaves on the ground. I’m not impressed at all.
