Mother drops baby out of window to safety before jumping from burning Lakewood home

A mother dropped her baby out of the window of a burning Lakewood home before jumping out herself, officials told TLS.

At approximately 6:30pm Friday night, police and firefighters responded to a Woodlake Manor Drive home for the reports of a working fire and entrapment.

Upon arrival, firefighters encountered a working fire on the second floor of the residence.

Firefighters learned that as the fire broke out, the mother dropped her six-month old baby from the window to a neighbor on the ground, before jumping herself out of the window.

The mother and child suffered numerous injuries – the mother’s injuries serious, officials said.

The fire was brought under control quickly.

The Fire Marshal’s Office, CIU and Prosecutor’s Office are investigating.

  1. So sad!!

Very hard to think in such a situation but a bucket tied with some shoe laces and string with the baby inside slowly lowered down is the best option

No one should ever know of these thing

  2. Really, Yossi?

Try doing that yourself in a calm situation, if you even have enough shoelaces (Shoelaces?… for real? Are you going to spend time in a rapidly advancing fire looking to undo 6″ pieces of shoe laces?) and/or string that just happens to be lying around your bedroom and, oh a pail that also happens to be lying around. See how long that takes you. Now picture the rapidly advancing fire, hear the crackling flames, feel the heat, breath in the suffocating smoke, listen to your baby crying out and feel the icy fingers of terror as you desperately look for that second pair of shoes so you can untie another pair of shoelaces to extend your escape ladder by another 12-20 inches.. oh my, you’re 12 feet off the ground.. what to do??
    Really?

A more practical plan would be to practice fire safety and prevention. Smoke alarms on each floor and outside each sleeping area. Carbon Monoxide alarms at least outside every sleeping area. Make sure homes with a basement apartment have interconnected alarms. If the upstairs or downstairs alarm goes off it is imperative that the other can be alerted even if no one is home in the alerting dwelling. Test them monthly or at least when the clock is changed. Teach and practice fire safety with your children. In case of fire, always close the door to the fire room if possible and you can do so safely. If trapped in a room close the door to that room. Keeping doors closed slows down the spread of fire and can be the difference between life and death. Make sure you have multiple exits from your home be it doors or windows, or other means of escape to the outside, and make sure they can open and close properly. Basements can be outfitted with window wells, large windows that can be removed and allow enough room for an adult (and child) to exit safely. Get escape ladders for high windows and practice using them. Designate a meeting place for all occupants of the home to meet at a specific location or neighbor a safe distance from the home on fire. This can be very helpful in determining who may or not still be trapped in the home or if everyone is safely out of the structure. As always, be diligent and safe. At the first sign of suspected fire immediately evacuate the home and call the Fire Dept from a safe location.

    Be warm and be safe.

  3. There are chain ladders that you should keep upstairs that store conveniently, attach quickly and securely and roll down to ground level.
    Preparation is preservation.

  4. Seriously, people?
Knotting those shoelaces together while fire coming closer and closer… really?
Sounds like she did a great job protecting her child, risking her own life in the process.
Prayers for mom and baby –

  5. Shes a mother of 4 beautiful girls & the steps she took to make sure her 2mon old daughter didnt ingest any smoke she deserves a medal, but shes now in critical condition ?

  6. No one should ever be in such a situation, but Amazon does sell for $120 a baby evacuation bag that allows someone to lower children up to 75 pounds from the fifth floor (or lower) to safety.
    It is called:
Baby Rescue Emergency Rapid Rescue Device
and was developed by a fireman from his experiences.

It is recommended that homes should have at least one of these and at least one escape ladder on each sleeping level, as well as proper working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors on each level. It is worth looking into interconnected wireless smoke detectors that activate each other upon an alarm. This allows people on a third floor to be immediately made aware of a danger that started in the basement etc.

They are relatively inexpensive and can really make a life and death difference of crucial minutes of escape c”v.

  7. So many fires! Maybe we can address this problem with a campaign on upgrading fire escapes or equipping homes/apartments with some sort of lightweight, draw-string, inflatable device that gets tossed to the ground. Tragically, fires are not on the forefront of peoples’ minds, but for those who have to flee a fire, chas v’shalom, speediness is of utmost concern.

  8. The landlords should all provide the ladders that go down the window. like someone else said they got one off of amazon. Or even fire extinguishers ones that work and are not recalled. Woodlake manor landlords make enough each condo to do that. These are facts im speaking..But not just woodlake landlords all landlords.
