EXCLUSIVE: Update on the Lakewood man who was ticketed for speeding on the way to the hospital

So what ever happened with the Lakewood man who was ticketed for speeding to the hospital with his pregnant wife in the car?

In a story we first broke here on TLS, and which subsequently went viral, we reported that the man received a summons for driving 78 in a 50 MPH zone, at approximately 11:55 PM on Squankum Road.

The incident drew attention from around the globe, with the majority of people siding with the driver – whose wife was in labor at the time.

According to a poll we ran, with over 2,000 participants, over 84% of people said the cop was wrong for holding up them up approximately seven minutes to issue the driver a summons.

Attorney and former Assistant Ocean County Prosecutor Ian Goldman of the Goldman Wells Legal Group, Red Bank, NJ, took the driver’s case, which was just settled.

“We are pleased that we were able to resolve this matter and avoid a trial,” Goldman told TLS exclusively. He added, “My client is humbled by the national attention and sympathy that was expressed towards him and his family during the incident. This encounter caused a lot of conversations around the dinner table about law enforcement, our expectations of them and when discretion should be exercised. While my client would rather not have received the speeding citation, he still respects law enforcement and the job they do. My client is thankful that his child is healthy, his family is doing well and they can put this matter behind them.”

The client plead guilty to an amended charge of N.J.S.A. 39:4-120.9. This statute does not carry any points and the Court imposed a $56.00 fine plus $33.00 in court costs.

  1. What? how is this settled. while I’m happy for the driver that he worked it out, the point wasn’t about his ticket. it was about the cop being completely unqualified to be in this job (and the depts completely lame response). as long as the cop is still on the job its not settled

  2. ok so nothing happened. The driver agreed to a lesser violation like any other person who gets a speeding ticket and got the fine. Haha. Anything happen to the cop? Nope. It seems he is free to do this same thing again.

    What a joke

  3. Everyone should stop with the comments already. Be thankful to the Borei Olam that we live in a medina that a raash is heard and keep the nasty comments to yourself. Negativity gets nowhere.

  4. This was a victory. $89 and some legal fees – not bad. After all, he was speeding – the emergent reason for doing so notwithstanding. More important, the incident threw an international spotlight on heavy-handed and potentially biased actions taken by the Howell PD against a member of the Orthodox community.

  5. Chief of Police in Howell Andy Kudrik is one of the nicest people i dealt with in Public Office. He is always there when the Lakewood Community needs him.

  6. For those of you who don’t know Ian Goldman. He is a real mentch and a super yid! With lots of love for people of all walks of life. He is smart , aggressive, and humble all in one package. Keep up the good work!!

  7. I just can’t understand it. This ticket should have been rescinded. Firstly because he was a acting first responder, albeit not being formally ordained, he was doing just that. and secondly because he was mistreated by having to wait seven minutes for his summons under those circumstances . I simply can’t understand the guilty side to th
story. If a ticket is not justly issued, then it isn’t just, even though the speeds ad up to be excessive. An unjust ticket based on the circumstances simply remains unjust. Why did he have to retain a lawyer. pls help

  8. Great Job by a Great Attorney. And for those of us with questions about HPD, ur wasting ur time posting here. You want answers ? I have a simple solution: show up next time to the annual Howell Coffee with a Cop day. Discuss it with them. They’re highly intelligent and professional.
