The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].
Question:
Dear Mayor,
Firstly, thank you for all the good you have done, including allowing us the opportunity to contact you through this forum.
Now for my question. I know other areas including other townships in NJ where after a certain time at night say 11 or 11:30, the traffic lights change to either flashing red or a combination of red/yellow for the two different directions. Maybe as a possibility this can be implemented for some of the township controlled traffic lights.
Thank you
Matt
Response from Mayor Coles:
Hi Matt,
Sorry for the delayed response. It’s been a busy time at work for me.
Many places where the lights flash after a certain hour are much smaller and quieter places than Lakewood. I do not know if we ever have a really slow period of time where that might work. I will run it by our traffic and safety officers and see how they feel about it. Please get back to me if you had certain intersections in mind.
Thanks
Ray

the 2 new lights going up on oak st would be a good candidate for this. 6pm-6am would be good, since there is not much traffic at those 2 intersections after school hours
I agree with the mayor that 11 or 11:30 pm may be too early for Lakewood. As someone who is on the roads till about 3:30 every morning I can assure you that from about 1 am the roads are pretty much empty. From 1:00 am until about 5:00 am would be an ideal time to try this in a nice chunk of Lakewood. Another solution would be to install sensors which would only make traffic signals turn red when a car approaches.
With the exception of Rt. 9 and other major intersections, (New Hampshire etc..) all other intersections should blink.
@thelakewoodscoop I am still waiting for a response from the mayor to questions I sent in over 4 months ago
Any way to find out what happened being it goes through the Lakewood scoop?
Thank you.s
All the New lights on Cedar bridge Avenue and new Hampshire are not busy after 12am can be blinking until 6:30am
@Mayor Ray Coles Among other people’s comments I was also thinking about airport road and the GSP exit where there can be zero cars and a very long red light.
Matt
I drive around Lakewood at night, and this is a great suggestion. I’ve always wondered why this isn’t done in Lakewood.
Here are some intersections that can use this feature after 1AM
Princeton x County
Princeton x Kennedy
Somerset x county
Clifton x County
Clinton x Kennedy
4th st x Monmouth
4th st x Clifton
Route 88 x clover
Forest Ave x 14th st
Thank you
I agree also the left turn onto Kennedy BLVD.driving route 9 south bound coming from Howell you have to wait so long to make the turn it is only green for 10 seconds
