NJ Gov. Murphy urges tighter gun laws after mass shooting in Florida leaves 17 dead

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy this evening is urging tighter gun safety laws in wake of the Florida mass shooting which left 17 students dead.

“EIGHTEEN school shootings in a month and a half is absolutely outrageous and appalling,” Murphy wrote. “We owe it to our children to fight the gun lobby and pass common sense gun safety legislation both in Congress and here in N.J. Inaction is not an option. #Parkland.”

17 students were killed and other injured when an 18-year-old former student opened fire.

According to Chabad, there are many Jewish students at the school.

  1. But when Trump called out Muslim terrorist he was criticised for speaking before having all the facts.
The governor of a state with two cities that are in the top 10 in murders should not be speaking. Had teachers been armed, 17 children wouldn’t be dead.

  2. No. If a few teachers were armed the shooter would been dead like in Texas where a couple of cops took out the gunman and the same happened at ballgame in DC.
People kill people. Making more silly laws gets nowhere. Conceal and carry lowers murder rates.

  3. For all you big gun rights advocates who say “the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy w a gun,” is that really true???? Wouldn’t not letting any random dude buy weapons of war such as an AR15 make more sense than arming teachers?? What will you say if some crazy teacher goes and shoots a student? The FACT is that in countries with tighter gun laws these tragedies just don’t happen on this scale. Look it up, the numbers don’t lie. For the record I’m a trump supporter conservative but I also have a brain.

    • An AR15 is not a weapon of war. That’s a common misconception. Automatic weapons, such as those used by the military have been illegal for years.

  4. I am definitely for stricter gun laws, especially laws about background checks. I believe that the more guns out there, the more chances of a tragedy occurring. But even those who disagree with me, could you please explain to me why a semi automatic rifle like the one used yesterday in Florida and in other school shootings, is just sold to almost anyone? Even if you want a gun for self defense or for sport, who needs a semi automatic rifle?!?

    • You’re displaying a lack of knowledge regarding weapons which is common in those calling for bans. Semi-automatic means it fires one bullet per trigger pull. An AR15 is no different than most handguns in this regard. It just looks scarier.

  5. Sir pistols are used at war too. The fact is that any automatic rifle is a weapon that does not ever belong in the hands of a civilian. There’s a reason that the AR15 was used in the aurora massacre and now here too. 17 lives gone is insane and unforgivable. Stop with the insanity. You don’t need an AR15 to ward off an intruder looking for your jewelry.

    • I agree. And that’s why automatic weapons have been banned for decades. The reason these weapons are used is likely because we are constantly being told how they are “assault rifles” (a meaningless term) and can kill many people in a very short period of time. The indisputable fact is that in that regard they are no different than handguns, they have the exact same rate of fire. So unless we’re calling for a blanket ban on weapons, it’s not making much sense.

  6. The law should be very plain and simple: any weapon which is semi automatic or automatic is illegal. How many more school shootings will it take for us to realize this?? Is 18 school shootings this year alone not enough? Please explain to me why oh why these mass shootings don’t occur ANYWHERE else on the world on the scale which occurs here. How far does the second amendment go? Should we allow people to possess RPG’s? How about tanks?

  7. AR 15 is a hunting rifle theres actually alot more powerful rifles on the market.
The problem is we have a constitution that up holds our rights to defend ourselves from a totalitarian government (Nazi Germany had a gun ban) which includes owning a gun so guns are never going away the smartest way to combat this epidemic better safety by arming more people. You don’t hear of shootings in NRA Meetings
Side note guns have always been legal in America and it’s getting worst every time there a new law to make it more complicated to own one legally so explain how more law’s are going to help

  8. The Republicans say, it’s not the guns, it’s the gun in the hand of somebody with a Mental illness, that the problem. Hello, the Republican obsession with guns, is actually a Mental illness! All the talk about the second amendment is silly. The second amendment, was in response to the Revolutionary war, in which the public overthrew the government, and to preserve such an enablement. Even the most sophisticated machine gun, won’t protect the public from today’s advanced warfare. For safety, a simple handgun is totally sufficient.
