  4. Oh boy, my immunosuppressant relative with cancer was really looking forward to this. And now due to his condition that he can’t get vaccines, he won’t be able to attend. Don’t know how I’ll break it to him…

    • There is no way your child will be turned away. He is precisely the reason why this was posted; to protect him and others. Wishing you a beautiful yom tov.

    • The word that you meant to use is “immunosuppressed”. The word that you used to describe your relative, “immunosuppressant”, means a drug that suppresses the immune system such as most cancer-treatment drugs, transplant drugs, and steroids. When the immune system is suppressed then the patient is called “immunosuppressed”, not “immunosuppressant”.

      The comments by “Jimmy” and “umm” are exactly correct. If those who are eligible for vaccination do not get vaccinated then those people are a threat to carry and transmit life-threatening or debilitating infections that can injure or kill those who could not yet get vaccinated or whose immune systems can no longer be relied upon to protect them such as infants, the elderly, and patients taking immunosuppressant drugs or full body radiation. “Jimmy” and “umm” are exactly correct.

    • @Berel You can hash out the medical benefits of immunization with your dr. However to say “every person has a choice” is not true. Would you say that with regard to abortion as well? Or would you agree that you have no right to make choices that will effect other people?

    • It’s a free event. Dr. Roberts has the right to say who can come or not. Have your Simchas Yom Tov at your own home. Don’t be so selfish. Get educated.

  8. The people who don’t immunize just don’t get it. I know of someone whose toddler child had a classmate who came.down with chicken pox, and so she has to take her child with cancer back to hospital as it would be dangerous for him to be near someone exposed to chicken pox!!!! Your actions have a far reaching effect!!!!

    Most insurances cover vaccines bec it is in thier best interest.

    • Expanding upon the comment by “Hunch”, health insurance companies are purely profit driven as are most companies and individuals in the larger society. Health insurance companies support vaccinations of everyone for two reasons: 1. health insurance companies make more money when people are healthy and not sick and 2. health insurance companies hire experts in medicine and economics to determine FACTUALLY which therapies will save them money by keeping people healthy. The facts overwhelmingly support that getting vaccinated greatly improves one’s chances of being healthy over not getting vaccinated.

      When I met President G. W. Bush at an event in D.C., a photo was taken of us. The photographer said that he had to retake the photo because I blinked.
      I told President Bush that just as FDR and Truman beat the Nazi and Imperial Japanese regimes, and President Reagan beat Soviet communism, he would beat radical Islam. President Bush look straight into my eyes and said “And I won’t blink”.

      Regarding this issue of risking the maiming or killing of babies, the elderly, and the infirmed in our community, I won’t blink. You’ll see.

  17. seriously i am really dissapointed!!! Dont think unvaccinated pose any risk toanyone unless they are sick and if they are sick they pose just as much risk anyone else who is sick and shouldn’t be walking around while contagious. Immunosuppressant patients have just as much risk from flu as from chicken pox. Actually fluis worse. My friends daughter just got flu for the second time and was vaccinated. My kids has no flu and were not vaccinated. Use ur brains and think instead of being brainwashed about vaccines. There is no scientific reason why certain diseases are vaccinated for and the rest are not. It’s whichever ones they can succesfully make and get approved. Trust me there are lots more coming up the pipeline and as soon as they do those illnesses will suddenly become dangerous and deadly. It is very easy for them to convince you of the danger. They use scare tactics. Come on people since when is chicken pox dangerous???

      You are just factually wrong on so many things that you wrote.

      1. You wrote “Don’t think unvaccinated pose any risk to anyone unless they are sick…”. Wrong. Different immunizations require different amounts of time to complete their injection schedules which can vary from a few years old until about 12 years old. So people who chose to not get vaccinated not only endanger themselves but also endanger infecting children from infants until about 12 years old. Also, the immune systems are frequently insufficient in the elderly and people with certain illnesses. Therefore, people who willfully don’t vaccinate endanger children from infancy to 12 years old, the elderly, and people with some illnesses.
      2. Vaccines are not perfect protections. And not all people who are not vaccinated get infected. Those facts do not change the fact that getting immunized overwhelmingly reduces the risks of injury and death. The exceptions do not disprove the overwhelming majority of cases. The only reason why you can think such things about vaccinations is because vaccinations have been so successful at nearly eliminating so many diseases that we no longer experience such terror. With polio, people caught a cold and ended up paralyzed for the rest of their lives. Polio was detected in some natural spring water in Israel a few years ago. Later in your post, you wrote “…when is chicken pox dangerous”. The answer is when chicken pox causes pneumonia, bleeding, brain infections, cellulitis, sepsis, toxic shock, joint infections, bone infections, or death. Other than those, it’s not very dangerous.

      • I don’t understand why a person who did not complete his scheduled vaccination is any less of a danger than a person who did not start.

    • Is this the proper way to talk to another person. Imagine you make a mistake, how would you like other people to correct you and explain to you in detail your mistake. Is a nasty comment really going to help. Is there any gain what so ever from your comment.

      • Avraham, while I commend your attitude and attempt to maintain civility, the anti-vaccine folk are not “making a mistake”. They are deliberately engaged in a smear campaign based on a conspiracy theory that has no basis in fact, and their campaign endangers and sickens countless individuals. They are a menace to society and should be excoriated at every possible opportunity to so that everyone realizes how evil their campaign is.

        • Please! You are talking about fellow Yidden! The ones who don’t vaccinate are doing it for the protection and health of their children based on the information they have. Most of them are former vaccinators whose children were harmed by the vaccine. Don’t say that they have “no basis in fact” when that is a completely wrong statement. If you read any insert that comes with any vial of any vaccine, you will find a list of side effects , or adverse reactions. I would like you to name one person that was “endangered or sickened” and you say “countless individuals” Actually the people who dont vaccinate can name multitudes of people who were actually hurt by the vaccines they received.

    • You can chose to not allow your child to eat nosh without endangering the life of your child and the lives of other members of the community who cannot defend themselves against certain infections such as children from infancy to 12 years old, the elderly, and people who are immunosuppressed. Health comes from a lot of things including good genetics, exercise, weight control, a healthy diet, wearing seat belts, blood pressure control, cholesterol control, not smoking, and immunizations (I won’t address the frumkeit issues here such as “Everything is in Hashem’s hands except catching a cold”). Your sarcasm does not prove anything.

    For the rest of us normal folks our children do just fine with normal dental hygiene and the word “moderation “.

  21. “Normal” is very subjective. Today’s generation of mothers find it “normal” when kids be on antibiotics a minimum of 3 times a year. It’s “normal” for half the kids to have ADD, adhd, receiving some sort of therapy, or have an autoimmune disease. That’s today’s normal. Come see how healthy our unvaccinated children are. You will never see such a group of healthy children in the vaccinated population.

    • They are healthy because they are lucky enough to be surrounded by children who are vaccinated and with “herd immunity” have practically eradicated the most horrible diseases such as polio, whooping cough, smallpox, mumps, hepatitis, meningitis etc. The life expectancy is much higher today than it was before the days of vaccinations. Do you really want to turn back the clock to the “good old days” when people didn’t expect to live past their 60’s? There’s a reason the retirement age is 65. It’s because years ago, most people didn’t live much past that. Life today with vaccinations is far from perfect (even with adhd etc), but it is better than life BEFORE vaccinations. (and don’t give me the “today we have better hygiene & sanitation” argument. Ask the people alive today who lived through the Polio epidemic of the 1950’s. They lived in clean sanitary, houses in New York City, that were newly built with modern plumbing and electric, and it did not keep away polio and other diseases. If one of the above illnesses would chas v’shalom come to your neighborhood, would you vaccinate your child? or rely on your clean, bleached house to keep it away?)

    • People like “lakewoodmama” are the reason people die from polio and measles when they could have been saved from it. Total stupidity and negligence to not vaccinate your kids. You put the entire community at risk.

      Lakewoodmama, your thinking is quite twisted. There are well-visits and sick-visits to doctors. The illnesses that you listed all represent reasons for sick-visits to doctors and no one considers illnesses to be normal.

      ADD and ADHD are relatively new diagnoses and the medications to address them have dramatically helped those patients. If the medications didn’t do so well then people would stop using them. Many of these children were previously outcasts in the school systems since it was thought that they should just be able to chose to sit and concentrate but we now understand why they couldn’t. Nonrecognition of illness injured these children.

      Autoimmune diseases are relatively rare disorders and not normal at all (although you state otherwise). Most autoimmune diseases are quite devastating.

      Regarding how healthy your unvaccinated children are, I have been told that a two year old frum child died from meningitis a couple of years ago in Lakewood. Who gave that child meningitis? Not someone who was immune to it… There is a history of clusters of people who have chosen to not immunize in which there have been outbreaks of diseases that no longer occur in immunized populations. Some of these outbreaks have been recent and with unnecessary loss of life.

    • Come visit my healthy VACCINATED family…no sick doctor appointments this winter, no cavities in any of my kids and receiving no therapy. Let me know when we can schedule a visit with out 2 families…obviously it needs to be remotely since i won’t let my kids hang out with yours.

  22. I am a pediatrician in Lakewood. I commend Dr. Roberts for helping to protect children from needless exposure to infection in this beautiful but crowded setting. This requirement should be put into place for all our gatherings. Hopefully, those parents who refuse to properly protect their children and thereby expose their children and possibly other children to dangerous diseases will get the message that this is just not acceptable in our society.

  23. Lakewoodmama you at Entitled to your own opinion. However, to state that children with ADD/ADHD is from vaccines is absolutely absurd. The poliovirus was illuminated because of vaccines, so yes now you don’t get sick from it, that’s because we all vaccinated our children till now.

    And yes a normal mother will treat her child If he suffers from ADD or ADHD, and not be in denial!

    There is no flu vaccine it’s a flu shot that protects against specific strains of flu so even with the shot you can get a different strain not so with vaccines
    Chicken pox is not a danger to anyone the only reason to get the vaccinefor your child is so you don’t have to deal with it
    They make vaccines for dangerous diseases like measles mumps small pox police etc

    • To further clarify what TheDoctor is saying:

      Some viruses have “antigenic shift” where the outside coating of the virus, that the immune system recognizes, changes each year. The CDC (Center for Disease Control of the U.S. government) watches the strains of flu each year that are migrating from the Far East towards Europe and then probably to the U.S. to try to predict which stains of the flu are likely to hit the U.S. each year. This is not a perfect science but it is the best that we can do since the outside look of the flu virus changes each year (again, called antigenic shift). The viruses and bacteria that are covered by the usual childhood vaccination schedules do not have antigenic shift. They look the same on the outside every year so we can have fixed vaccines against them and hit them every time.

    • Correction: this is a privet event. You may think it is a public event because Dr. Roberts invites so many people, but it is still a privet event.

  27. @lakewoodmama I completely disagree! I have 2 neighbors who don’t vaccinate and every day I hear them complain about how another kid is sick with this, that or the other. Her kids seem beyond kvetchy to me and dont seem more healthy then my vaccinated kids.

    • can’t really tell from one or two families. You need a scientific study to see the difference between vaccinated and unvaccinated kids. The problem is that no one is willing to fund a study. (I think bec. they are afraid of what the results may show!)

  32. I am so confused. If a child is not immunized how is that posing a threat to an immunized child. The immunized child is protected because they were immunized!! Again – all these comments are saying that a non immunized child will endanger an immunized child. If your child is immunized you should not worry whether another child is not immunized as you are protected!! Or is it possible that immunization does not really protect you???

    • Its very simple, immunization only works if everyone is immunized, the immunized person carrys the disease but its a very light strain so when you come in contact with other immunized people its also a light strain so light vs light = healthy. when an immunized person comes in contact with a non immunized person its a different strain and the immunized body cant fight it. this is the unprofessional gist of it

  33. For all of your anti vaccination people out there. I challenge you to justify your position. There isn’t a single piece of evidence defending this position. I understand that there are crazy doctors out there that defend this and it blows my mind.

      • There is no such thing as a vaccine-injured child. All there is is circumstantial “evidence” such as the famous “my child suddenly started exhibiting signs of autism within a week of getting a vaccine”.

        Although we empathize with the families in such stories, the assumption of causality is remarkably stupid. Assuming a typical child gets vaccinated approximately 7 times in the first year, that means that any given day of the year has about a 1 in 7 chance of being within a week of a vaccination. In other words, one in every seven autistic kids who develop signs of autism in the first year will do so within a week of a vaccine simply due to random chance. That adds up to thousands of kids who are touted as “evidence” who are in fact nothing more than evidence of basic math.

        • so why not push off the vaccines until the age when autism would show anyway, that would prove that the vaccines don’t contribute to autism.

          • Because when the children are younger, illnesses are easier for them to contract, and can do more damage, as their immune system has not totally developed yet.

          • Because obviously until that age many babies will die of those diseases the vaccines prevent.

            Besides, nobody has to prove that vaccines don’t contribute to something that can be easily attributed to simple statistics. The burden of proof is on you if you want to make that link.

    • You are absolutely wrong! Why don’t you do your own research? Do you think all of the people who don’t want to vaccinate are just doing it for no reason? You can start by reading the insert in any vial of vaccine where they list the adverse reactions that can come from the vaccine.

If you don’t understand this concept, then your opinion about vaccines can’t be called an educated one, afterall, you are missing one of the basic parts of it.

      You are correct. The collective memory of people tends to fade if they did not see it themselves. Religiously, we have this with Tisha B’Av where there is a challenge to fully feel the loss of something that we never experienced. This is similar to the lack of experience of people with the Holocaust, the Pogroms, the Black Plague, house and building fires, Polio, Whooping Cough, German Measles, communism, and so many other things in history that caused mass death and misery. People need to be educated to try to understand what happened in the past. Unfortunately in this case, people’s decisions to not vaccinate endangers many, many lives especially children from infancy to about 12 years old, the elderly, and people who are immunosuppressed as well as endangering themselves. There are ongoing pockets of people who don’t vaccinate across the U.S. which occasionally have outbreaks of one of these diseases and children die unnecessarily. Please see the next comment from Yaakov which does not prove anything, because it is anecdotal evidence, but it is typical of what eventually happens as the number of people who don’t vaccinate increases. I intend to consult the CDC’s data base to see if there has been a cluster of meningococcal deaths in the Lakewood area.

  37. I was unfortunate to send 2 days in a children’s hospital not far from lakewood. I was in the Kosher food room when I came across a couple from lakewood that was there with a kid with meningitis . I was stunded when I heard that they didn’t vaccinate . Then next day I can across a father with the same story , I was sure he was a uncle as I remembered the guy from yesterday was not him. Low and behold the was a 2 nd case from lakewood unvaccinated !! I wonder how many more, this doesn’t get reported

  38. This question has been answered dozens of times. A child who is not immunized can contract and spread- for example- whooping cough or any of the other diseases to:
    1) babies who are too young to be immunized
    2) children who are in middle of their course of immunization, but not fully finished the entire set of immunizations
    3) small percentage of people who for certain reasons (allergys or other health reasons) cannot be immunized.
    4) Immunizations are not 100% effective. There is a small chance that it won’t work for some children.
    The larger the group of unvaccinated children who exist, the higher the risk for the people listed above.

    • number 2) children in the midst of their course of immunizations. they can also contract and spread whooping cough. They are just as dangerous as non immunized people. Also, Please give me one example of an immunized person who caught whooping cough from an unimmunized person In Lakewood, or anywhere else!

  42. The non immunized children are not a big threat to the other immunized children but what about all the pregnant ladies that will be attending? Maybe they also shouldn’t attend???

  44. This is a private, sponsored event. If you don’t want to follow the rules, stay home. As for the comment that people will send their unimmunized kids anyway, that is out-and-out g’naiva. Dr Roberts has made it clear that his generosity does not extend to unimmunized people who could pose a risk to others. If you bring them, you are stealing.

  45. Anyone who received MMR or Varicella vaccine recently should definitely not attend either as those shed. People can contract those illnesses from someone who was recently vaccinated.

  50. There are many medical professionals today that say getting immunize is good for the general public but that does not mean that every single person needs it. They also say that many sicknesses such as Polio etc. are not around today not because of the vaccine theory. I heard from one medical professional that he wants vaccinated a child and the child got diabetes for life as a result. Let’s not respond to all these arguments just live and let live.     It seems that neither side will completely convince the other. Even if a few anti-vaxxers will reconsider there will still remain many who won’t vaccinate. Every time this topic is discussed it doesn’t seem to change anything rather it only seems to further emphasize the divide and created more animosity between us all. Especially considering that there is no reasonable way to enforce this is it worth it? Anti-vaxxers are all around us and we don’t even know it. All this announcement served was to give voice to the Yetzer Hora who loves when we fight. And why is it that when it comes to this topic people forget that we are nation that follows Da’as Torah? Our reaction to this issue, on either side, should follow our local Da’as Torah. Rather than showing our ugly side and fighting each other, to no results as experience shows, shouldn’t we be asking our Da’as Torah what the proper reaction should be?

  54. I would like to know why no attempts are being made to create safer vaccines. Or vaccines that are safer for children with autoimmune diseases or allergies. This is like a fight over whether penicillin saves lives or not. One side continues to point out how many lives are saved with it, the other side points out how humans survived for centuries without it and it’s overuse causes resistance to superbugs, meanwhile, some people are actually ALLERGIC to penicillin. And there are other options for those people.

    Vaccines is the only medicine that I can think of where there are zero options. It’s one size fits all and there are NO EXCEPTIONS. We have so many different types of antibiotics, pain medications, anti-depressants, antihistamines, anti-inflammatory medications. When one doesn’t work or isn’t tolerated, we try another one. Why are there no options with vaccines?

    Why is there no research into what components are causing severe reactions, and sometimes death, or exploration of why some people react to them while other don’t? Both sides are right and both sides are wrong, but meanwhile, some people are being permanently hurt by vaccines and nothing has changed.

    We need our researchers and medical professionals to stop gaslighting survivors and their parents and actually investigate life-altering reactions and then work toward decreasing them. There is no sense in downplaying the potential harm of diseases. But there is obvious potential harm in injecting someone who has an autoimmune disease with immune stimulants or injecting a person who has allergies with their allergens.

    Vaccines are not going to kill or maim every person who gets them but neither will the diseases they protect against. The choice doesn’t have to be for or against vaccines, it should be for or against safer options.

    • You are wrong on the facts.

      There have been many improvements in vaccines over the decades. For example, the DTP vaccine is now the DTaP vaccine. Instead of the vaccine containing whole cell pertussis (P) it now contains the surface protein of pertussis that our immune systems will recognize and not the rest of the cell which can cause allergic reactions (now called aP of DTaP which stands for “acellular pertussis” which means no pertussis cells just a protein.). There have been many other improvements in other vaccines too. The risk of not taking vaccines used to far, far outweigh the risk of taking them and that margin has only increased with each improvement. You are just lacking facts.

      Regarding penicillin saving lives, there is a 1 in 50,000 chance of dying from penicillin but it increases one’s changes of surviving pneumonia from 1% survival to 99% survival. Penicillin is not without risk but the risk is so far below 1% that it doesn’t make sense to even consider it when penicillin changes the risk of pneumonia from a 99% death rate to a 99% survival rate.

      You are just pontificating without the facts.

  55. To echo Yaakov T’s sentiment, lets not forget that the true danger to Klal Yisroel is sinas chinam. Dr. R. Roberts in a huge showing of ahavas chinam arranges,sponsors and coordinates this massive carnival lets not tirn into a forum for petty and immature personal attacks.
    P.S. I have my children vaccinated BUT ALSO,teach them to respect others even if they have different opinions…

  57. I wonder if any one of these parents who don’t vaccinate would still not had they lived through the 1950’s? (Like when polio was in every community etc. people died or were paralyzed for life after a very painful illness) Highly unlikely. It is simply ignorance and a bit of the whole “let me do what I want” attitude.

    This train of thought (and actions), have led to outbreaks of measles, mumps and other preventable diseases in select communities persuaded by this junk science.
    Many of these Diseases were thought to be practically eradicated, yet they have made periodic comebacks with deadly consequences.

    • Even if every single person in the United States would be immunized, there are people in developing countries who are not. People travel and carry diseases, immunized or not.

      Diseases are not eradicated unless eradicated worldwide.

Where is people’s sensitivity for the individuals whose children and parents suffer every day from vaccine injury. It’s real. It exists. We exist.   63. Qwerty, If you want to know the truth, I am both (pediatrician and rabbi). However, you don’t need to be a Dayan to know that taking something that’s not being offered to you (because you are not following the conditions offered) is stealing. Any secular policeman or lawyer will tell you that. As for Achim, you are right that you can’t know if someone is immune just because he was vaccinated, but you CAN know that he’s NOT immune if he wasn’t vaccinated (and didn’t have the disease).

    My heart goes out to you about the loss of your precious baby boy. May you have a true Nechama. Don’t listen to this political petty conversation. Everyone knows vaccines can cause injury. Not everyone wants to believe it. I hope hashem doesn’t test them because that will be a very hard way for them to find out out about a reality that exists. The medical field is always so busy trying to prove their points that vaccines are safe. Just a thought…why do they have to try so hard…besides this “controversy” is on a national level. If it is so debated that apparently there is truth to it.
    I do vaccinate my children but I do so with a heavy heart.
    I am in pain tonight hearing about your terrible loss and people’s insensitivites here are bothering me terribly.

  72. No one is going to be checking vaccination records for admission to the carnival. I do the carnivals to try to be an eved Hashem by servicing his people with free, high quality kosher entertainment with kosher food in a kosher environment. I am asking those who have chosen to not be vaccinated, even though medically they can be vaccinated, to not attend so that they don’t endanger others who have no choice but to be susceptible to these infectious diseases.

    • How about adults? I haven’t had a vaccine for years! What about flu vaccine? Do we all need to have taken it to be invited to the event?

    This was a request which started as “please..”, dr Roberts in all responses never said that he doesn’t allow..

    • Can someone tell me who got sick at previous events? I would guess that is why Dr Roberts does not want them to attend. And did they catch it from an unimmunized person? Was the unimmunized person a child or an adult?

Let’s say for arguments sake that there is truth to the utterly discredited theory that vaccines cause autism I just have one question why in the world is it the same people who believe that also only eat organic and also are busy with vitamins and kinesiology and all sorts of other “health” things?   78. People are forgetting how it was before vaccines when people died or were paralyzed from polio and other illnesses. In today’s day and age most of us have been affected by someone who died from cancer. We see families torn apart, we see children suffering. If they came out with a vaccine against certain cancers would all you antivaccine people also push this one aside? Or would you rather the chance of cancer over the minimal possible side effects of the vaccine? I know cancer isn’t contagious but I’m just trying to bring out that people are forgetting the devastating effects those illnesses had.

    And please be aware when your children are in shidduchim of the vaccination status of the prospective spouse; the lives of your future grandchildren are at stake.

  79. the adults are not vaccinated as the vaccine wears off after 5-10 years. and the vaccine doesnt work about 20% of the time. the workers there are not vaccinated either, that should make it about a 75% unvaccinated carnival. the same numbers apply to the schools.

  80. A) We will never know how many deaths he’s responsible for. Any non-vaccinated child that dies from a preventable disease is on his record.

  81. I don’t think any of us should attend school, carnivals, and public events as we are all unvaccinated against thousands of diseases! Therefore, even when we aren’t sick, we must be constantly spreading contagious and potentially fatal viruses like malaria, kawasaki, and typhus to each other. So I’m vaccinated against .0001% of infectious diseases and she’s vaccinated against 0%. I will definitely not lose sleep, or a friendship over this…maybe we just like to feel like we’re the ones in control….

  83. Every generation has different challenges and what we are all dealing with today is not the crisis of chicken pox or polio. (which may be in part thanks to vaccines). Our generation is dealing with things like ADD, autism, and chronic conditions. Kudos to the ‘health nuts’ who are trying to deal what the issues are NOW and not getting stuck back in time to 80 years ago. The media likes to hype everything up, but seriously, a handful of people getting the measles or the mumps is NOT an epidemic, just a little more than an inconvenience. When the mumps went around a few years back some in our family got it with mild symptoms. Psst….it wasn’t a big deal at all! Infectious diseases today that are scary and potentially devasting are diseases like strep (think PANDAS) and lyme. I don’t know anyone who hesitates to send their kid to camp even though there is a of very real probability of catching lyme
