UPDATED: List of stores that are problematic and non-problematic for Purchasing Chometz immediately after Pesach

Purchasing Chometz from Target – even locally in Lakewood and Howell, as well as from Superfresh and Sunfresh Produce Store  immediately after Pesach should be avoided if possible, according to Rabbi Shmuel Heinemann of the Star-K.

Rabbi Heinemann explains that the items may be from a Jewish distributor that does not sell its Chometz, posing a problem for consumers in regards to Chometz not owned by a non-Jew over Pesach.

If possible, says Rabbi Heinemann, one should avoid purchasing items from Target until May 6.

In addition, you must inquire regarding each Shoprite store.

Purchasing Chometz items immediately after Pesach from the following national stores, is okay.

  1. Most of these stores are not local. Do we have any information from local Rabbonim regarding local stores? Does the KCL have a list of local stotres?

  2. Exbrisker, your Lomdus is Takka unconventional. The further away we get from Pesach is less of a reason to be חושד for חמץ שעבר עליו הפסח.

  3. Tomatoface, if a store sells its chametz and is careful not to get new stock during pesach the store will be ok right after pesach. If they subsequently replenish their inventory from a problematic wholesaler the store will then cease to be ok….

  4. I’m addressing the issue of a distributor who delivered to the allowed store after Pesach. This scenario is only nogeah not immediately after Pesach.

  5. tomatoe face. you are mistaken. some products are actually a problem only as we get further from pesach.
the turn around time is what is important. chametz product that has a 30 day turn around can actually be a problem several weeks after yom tov

  6. Well this is isn’t definitive so double check but I think that the shoprites are either saker shoprites, not jewish and very accommodating that the chametz is likely okay lihalach, and, or Perlmuter shoprites, jewish owned and may be a issue, chametz wise, do your due diligence.
Shoprite in Howell on route 9 as is well known is Saker shoprite and even goes out of their way to stock extra chametz for their halachic clientele.

  7. the reason why people run to shoprite immediately after yomtov is because the local owner (saker) is a goy and the chometz is in his store before yomtov starts, not in a wakefern distribution canter which has shailos who owns it. is royv goyim or not ?stockholders etc. he does own quite a few in the area but you need to know that the chometz was there. last year i remember that the stuff on the pallets was good but not on the shelfs as they were restocked from the warehouse during yomtov.

  8. Target is only a problem for outside products as the distributor may be Jewish. The target brand items are not a problem (unless you take issue with their marriage view)…And the point of waiting untill Shavuos I once read comes from the fact that during sefirah we are extra makpid not to purchase products from a chashash yid. Once sefirah is over we are more meikel as many items can sit on shelves for months before a turn over actually happens…

  9. This is a perfect opportunity to patronize our local Frum stores that sold their Chometz correctly. Generally, they are our neighbors and you will be giving them Parnassah as well! (No, I don’t own a store in Lakewood)
