Update from OU Kosher on OU-D Barbecue Pringles [UPDATED]

TLS spoke with the OU Kosher today regarding the recent change in Hechsher on the barbecue Pringles.

As reported last night, the Hechsher changed from OU to OU-D (Dairy).

OU Kosher tells TLS the company decided approximately one to two months ago to list it as Dairy, however, the Dairy is not referring to the ingredients, but rather the equipment (Keilim).

The OU Kosher additionally commented, that although they don’t currently differentiate between Dairy and Dairy Equipment, they may change back to listing DE.

Currently, says the OU Kosher, the chips are still OU Parve, in anticipation of the change, which is expected to happen in the next few months. At that time, the OU is expected to put out an alert about it.

UPDATE: Based on new information we received (see also attached photo), there seems to be conflicting reports as to whether the chips contain actual milk.

We recommend refraining from eating the chips:

1) If you do not eat Cholov Stam.

2) Even if you eat Cholov Stam, it should not be eaten together with meat.

We will post any further updates when available.

  1. Why are the chips currently parve? Are they not using dairy equipment yet or considered parve because only dairy equipment not actual ingredients?

  2. According to many Poskim, dairy equipment still needs to be cholov yisrael and my understanding was that they should not be eaten with fleishigs. Can someone with knowledge of kashrus and manufacturing please expound on this?

  3. THIS ALERT IS INCORRECT.

I spoke with OU as well as Pringles customer service.

The formula was changed December 2017 and now contains WHEY WHICH IS DAIRY.
