Why is the NJSP in Lakewood so often?

That’s a questions we’ve been asked dozens of times recently, so TLS reached out to the NJSP to inquire about it.

Initially, the response from the NJSP spokesman was that they are here for the extra enforcement of the UDrive UText UPay distracted driving campaign – which just ended.

However, when we mentioned people were inquiring about their presence even prior to the campaign, the spokesman had this to say.

“Lakewood is specifically an area where there’s been a high rate of pedestrian and cyclist fatal accidents – so we work with the local authorities, even the county authorities, to target officially high traffic and high accident areas,” the spokesman said.

The spokesman added that these campaigns are set up after analyzing stats throughout the State.

Toward the end of 2017, the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office also  added patrols in Lakewood due to the string of pedestrian deaths, but the campaign focused on specific areas such as Route 70 and Cedarbridge Avenue – where multiple fatal accidents occurred.

The Troopers on the other hand, have been targeting many other areas around Lakewood – including Forest Avenue, and Clifton Avenue downtown.

So just how long will the Troopers remain in Lakewood?

“Based on those numbers, they may continue if they don’t see those trends going down,” the spokesman said.

  1. B”H!!!
With HaShem’s help this will help people improve their driving and cut down on accidents. We have to do our hishtadlus!!

  2. It’s very simple. Lkwd is a low-risk hi-return for them. Where do want them, Trenton? Camden ? Newark ? That’s high-risk low-return. They follow the money and they don’t want anyone getting hurt.

  3. I don`t see myself as a “kiss up” to law enforcement but I welcome the NJSP and all police officers to uphold the law as they have been sworn to uphold. As a resident of this beautiful community for the last 10 years I have seen not 10`s but 100’s of near miss and actual accidents on the streets of Lakewood thanks to (moderated). I welcome with open arms and I am happy to see them when I drive along the roads. Thank you @Lakewood PD & NJSP for enforcing the traffic laws of our community.

  4. So why don’t they go to the problem areas? Do the have a answer?
In the Talmudic world we say ‘teauftah-NJSP!’=the original answer is not true

  5. Why would they NOT be in Lakewood ? they love it here !! The ladies bring them danishes & coffee for breakfast, salmon fur lunch, Shnitzel & overnight kugel for supper & everyone greets them so nicely in WaWa. You think they get this kinda love in Bayonne or Paterson ?? It’s like a Chanukah Mesiba every day of the year. We need to stop feeding them, then they’ll leave.

  6. Frankly, I wish they were here today. I witnessed a dangerous driver running a stop sign at a crowded 4 way intersection at Princeton and Monmouth, the same at 7th and Monmouth, and also an LPD SUV glide through Park and East 4th, southbound. The issue is not about getting/paying tickets. It’s about not creating danger for other people. There are too many accidents with cars and pedestrians around here.

  7. It’s funny to see the comments
U can see which ppl are good drivers and which ones are really scared of tstpd
If you drive fine Ull be fine
Tlpd also know how to pull over
if tstpd get the numbers to go down then we should give them more food when they come so they don’t leav!
Ty @tls for the info was wandering the same

  8. The problem is that the good drivers are the ones getting pulled over…. for small offenses or the cop says she or he was on his cellphone when they were NOT! Happened to me. The bad drivers never get caught

    • You are right its always the small petty tickets that people get, the people who run stop signs and red lights or illegal passing are rarely the ones who get caught

  9. Isn’t it ironic thay every time you notice a dangerous driver no police are around???
As long as they find reasons to give out tickets they’ll stick around!!!

  10. unfortunately the over development has created a frustrating driving situation where drivers in many instances (and more so on the south of the lake) or forced to drive more aggressive and less courteous and polite in order to get where then need to get.

  11. Good. And they should have unmarked cars on the streets at night, especially Motzei Shabbos when the muggings, burglaries and robberies occur.

  12. Well, if the numbers are in, and Lakewood has a higher rate of pedestrian fatalities, as they mentioned. So we ask another question, where is the township? is the best they can do is invite the NJSP?

We are missing sidewalks on RT 9 & 70.

  13. Many driving violations happen from frustrated drivers. Maybe they should report back to the state that Lakewood need a major infrastructure upgrade and its time to widen the 9… that’s if the State really cares about safety…

  14. I have not the slightest doubt in my mind why they’re here. As someone who has lived in lkwd for 25 years I have noticed the driving in this town get steadily worse within the last 5 years. It has reached a point where I have never had a drive in lkwd where i did not need to use my horn, and usually leave my car shaking from the insane number of near misses there are. THIS HAS GOT TO STOP! People must use caution and follow the law, lakewood MUST improve. And until then I welcome any and all help from lakewood police, nj police, or the national guard of need be. #DriveSafelyinLakewood

  15. It seems people aren’t texting while they are driving. They’re driving while they are texting !
Put the phones away, its become an epidemic.

  16. Why do so many people leave fake names on here when they comment? Are they afraid of being hunted down for their opinions? This is America, ever heard of the First Ammendment? Btw, my name's Dovid.

They’ll leave when people learn to drive normally & obey the law. I’ve only been here a few months, & what I’ve seen on the road has been outrageous.

  17. The NJSP was formed with the mandate to patrol and administer to rural areas which typically don’t have much of a force, due to low populations in large areas. That being said, if they choose to divert resources to high urban density areas, logic dictates that priority be given to REAL crime such as murder, drugs, human trafficking etc.. These are dangerously common everyday occurrences which the average city has less the required manpower and resources to combat.

  18. I am not from Lakewood but I’m a frequent visitor. I can not believe the amount of people that are on the phone! Talking and texting. Perhaps tls should post pictures of those who blatantly show disregard to the law. It will be a deterrent.

  19. I try so hard not to complain about the driving here because I don’t want to speak badly about others. I feel like I am surrounded by people who just have absolutely no concern for human life including their own and their passengers. I am no naive youngster and have lived in many places but have NEVER seen the sheer level and volume of reckless, aggressive, and dangerous driving that I see here almost constantly. It seems to be the norm rather than the exception. There is no valid excuse for it whatsoever – not overdevelopment, infrastructure, poor lighting, lack of sidewalks, lack of traffic signals, etc. etc. The problem is the way people drive. This is the true test of midos.

  20. The driving is out of control, I stopped at the cross walk in front of chestnut st shul. A young boy was walking with his skateboard in hand. Driver behind me tried to swerve and go around me nearly plowing into a line of parked cars. Seriously it’s terrifying to drive on Lakewood.

  21. I don’t agree with most of the comments here, complaining on people’s driving etc.
The fact is that streets & roads are dangerous and they are to be planned and designed for safety, with side walks, traffic lights & stop signs where needed.
All of this is desperately missing in ALL Lakewood neighborhoods, and wherever it is approved it takes years to install. the growth of the town is faster then the infrastructure improvements.
Obviously, i also understand that the people working in the township are doing the best they can, as we can witness it from the town-hall meetings, and from the mayors answers here on TLS. However, the growth is still not balanced with road improvements and safety.

  22. SAY THE TRUTH!!!!
They are here TO MAKE MONEY!!!!!

Whoever is dumb enough to think otherwise is a fool!

If it was a safety issue many things would have been done to benefit safety, (not to mention going after real criminals,)
How many kids were killed by car accidents in the past 5 years? How many lives were taken by drugs? You do the math!

  23. As they admit, they were called in by the local or county Police. Shame on you.
State police are more aggressive & less respectful than local police since they don’t need to answer to anyone.
They are a haughty & rough bunch.
We need good local policing & passable roadways.
This should be litigated as discrimination toward the orthodox community.
Please keep these police on the parkway.

  24. @totty. Meant to say Princeton and Squankum 4-way intersection. In any event, the NJSP are welcome here every day as far as I am concerned.

  25. Its interesting because we moved away from Lakewood to Montreal and were pulled over by a policeman in another city. I have no problem being pulled over if justified but in this case the charge was actually not a violation at all. Turning left he mentioned wasn’t allowed on that particular street, afterwords we went back to street corner to double check the and to our surprise there was no such sign or any indication at all, in fact many cars turned just like we did at the stop sign. It was a little hard to come to terms to the fact that a policeman would fabricate a violation. We assumed must have seen our out of town plates and assumed we were easier targets. I actually really have respect for the policemen in NJ, and the States in general and always have. This incident only served to increase my respect for them. In Montreal in particular, I’ve heard of other such unjustified incidents such as this one occurring.
